CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 16, 2024) – Shortly after their New Jersey Athletic Conference game started here Wednesday night, the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team had an apparent goal nullified by an offside call.
Throughout the scoreless first half, that play loomed large, but early in the second half, the Scarlet Raptors scored the only goal they needed and they went on to defeat The College of New Jersey, 1-0.
The win lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 6-5-4 overall and 2-1-2 in the NJAC, while TCNJ fell to 1-10-4 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play.
The result also continued an odd trend of both teams dominating the results on their home pitch. Since 2004, Rutgers-Camden is 9-1 against TCNJ in Camden, but 0-7-4 against the Lions in Ewing.
Rutgers-Camden broke the scoreless deadlock at 51:51 when senior back
Pedro Jovel-Castro sprung freshman midfielder
Youssef Montasser on a breakaway. Lions senior goalie Colin Rentner charged out of the net in an attempt to stop Montasser, but the Raptor freshman bolted to his right around the keeper and fired into an open net. It was his second goal of the season and his first career game winner.
The Rutgers-Camden defense made that goal stand up, despite some second-half pressure from the Lions. Both teams finished with eight shots, including three on goal, while Rutgers-Camden held a slim 4-3 edge in corner kicks. The Lions had a 3-1 margin in corner kicks in the second half.
Rentner finished with two saves, while Raptor senior
Sean Boen made three saves and also charged out of the net to smother several dangerous balls. The shutout was the seventh of the season for Boen, lowering his stellar goals-against average to 0.80.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. NJAC game at New Jersey City University.
