CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 5, 2024) – The Montclair State volleyball team rallied from a one-set deficit and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden , 3-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match here Tuesday night.
Montclair State won by scores of 20-25, 25-16, 25-18 and 25-15.
The loss drops Rutgers-Camden to 5-13 overall and 2-2 in NJAC play, while Montclair State improved to 11-6 and 3-1.
The Red Hawks have won nine of their last 10 matches against the Scarlet Raptors.
The match started off well for the Scarlet Raptors, who went on a six-point run to break an 18-18 tie, before closing out their 25-20 win on a sophomore
Sofia Granieri. The six-point run included five Red Hawk attack errors and a kill by Granieri.
In a second set that featured nine ties and five lead changes, Montclair State broke open a tight 14-13 lead with a seven-point run to take a 21-13 advantage. That run was aided by three kills from freshman Camryn Muuss, who set a Montclair State four-set kill record with 30 at Stockton on Oct. 1 to earn NJAC Player of the Week honors on Monday.
The Red Hawks took the lead for good in the third set with an eight-point run, breaking a 5-5 tie, and led all the way in the fourth set after starting with a 7-1 lead.
Granieri finished with 11 kills and eight digs for the Scarlet Raptors, while freshmen
Gabby Gbolahan and
Maria Theruviparambil added nine and eight kills, respectively. Senior
Kaitlyn Parrish collected six kills and a team-high three block assists.
Sophomore defensive specialist
Madison Snelgrove collected a team-high 11 digs, while adding one service ace.
The Raptors' two setters, junior
Avery Ang and sophomore
JoAnna Andrews, had 17 assists apiece, while Ang complected a double-double with 10 digs. Sophomore libero
Mia Owens also had 10 digs.
Muuss finished with 24 kills for Montclair State, while junior setter Emily Carcich had 43 assists and senior libero Katie Rodman had a match-high 17 digs.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Thursday when it hosts Gwynedd Mercy University in a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
