ELIZABETHTOWN, Penn. (Nov. 10, 2024) – A 12-day layoff didn't help the Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team as it closed its season with a 3-0 loss in a non-conference match at Elizabethtown College here Sunday afternoon.
The Scarlet Raptors, who hadn't played since a match at Stockton University on Oct. 29, lost to the Blue Jays by scores of 25-8, 25-21 and 25-16.
Rutgers-Camden closed its season at 6-20, while Elizabethtown improved to 17-11.
In the opening set, the Raptors never led and were tied only once, at 1-1. Elizabethtown went on to its 25-8 win on the strength of four kills and seven digs by senior outside hitter Savannah Lesley, with six assists coming from senior setter Emma Bitner. Sophia LaPorta and five digs from sophomore defensive specialist
Madison Snelgrove. Setters
Avery Ang and
JoAnna Andrews, a junior and sophomore, respectively, both had a pair of assists in the opening set.
In a tight second set, the Scarlet Raptors rallied from a 16-13 deficit to tie the score at 16-16, aided by a kill from senior right side
Peyton McGregor, an Elizabethtown attack error and an ace from sophomore libero
Mia Owens. The Blue Jays countered with the next five points, taking the lead for good on a kill by Lesley.
The third set was similar to the first one, with the Raptors trailing the whole way except for a 1-1 tie.
Owens, LaPorta and Snelgrove all had 13 digs, while Ang collected six kills, seven assists and eight digs. Andrews had 12 assists and six digs. Sophomore outside hitter
Sofia Granieri collected six kills, while McGregor added five kills.
Freshman outside hitter Lucy Stanek led the Blue Jays with 12 kills, while senior middle blocker Gracie Britten added 10. Both Bitner and senior setter Sophie Savick had 16 assists, while junior defensive specialist Lucy Stern collected 15 digs.
