Softball team sweeps two games on last day in Florida

LEESBURG, Florida (March 15, 2024) – The Rutgers University-Camden found the ideal way to make getaway day a successful one at the PFX Spring Games here Friday.

The Scarlet Raptors wrapped up their spring break trip with a pair of victories, defeated St. Norbert College in a five-inning game, 8-0, before edging Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 7-5.

The wins snapped a four-game losing streak down south for Rutgers-Camden, leaving the team with a 4-6 record on its 10-game spring trip. Rutgers-Camden opens its home schedule Tuesday at 3 p.m. with a doubleheader against Alvernia University.

Rutgers-Camden 8, St. Norbert 0 (5 innings)

In a game called in the bottom of the fifth inning by the eight-run mercy rule, Rutgers-Camden collected 10 hits and took advantage of errors by the Green Knights. Freshman Sammie Friel, meanwhile, hurled her second shutout of the spring trip, raising her record to 2-1, with a three-hitter. She walked one and struck out two in her five-inning complete game.

The Scarlet Raptors used two hits and two walks in the bottom of the first inning to score the only run Friel needed. Her batterymate, junior catcher Kendall Lafferty, forced home the run with a bases-loaded walk.

In the second inning, two hits and three errors led to two unearned runs. Sophomore right fielder Ava Maloof doubled home one run and scored on a single by sophomore second baseman Gianna Bauer.

Four hits produced two more runs in the fourth inning, with junior third baseman Luci Hutchinson and Lafferty singling home runs. Two hits, a walk and a big error ended the game in the Raptors' three-run fifth inning, with Bauer's RBI single plating the final run.

Bauer went 3-for-4 for the Raptors, while senior shortstop Meg Gray, Maloof and Hutchinson all added two hits. Gray scored three runs.

Rutgers-Camden 7, Saint Joseph's 5

The Scarlet Raptors scored three runs in the first inning and two in the second as they held a 5-1 lead going to the bottom of the second. The Monks (2-8), however, tied up the game with a four-run second inning before the Raptors finally broke on top to stay, scoring the final two runs in the third inning.

Hutchinson ripped an RBI single and Lafferty singled home two runs in the opening inning for Rutgers-Camden. After Saint Joseph's (Standish, Maine) scored once in the bottom of the frame, Gray and Bauer collected RBI singles in the top of the second inning.

Three hits, a walk and an error led to four game-tying runs for the Monks in the second inning, with sophomore designated player Chantelle Bouchard plating two runs with a single.

The Raptors scored the decisive runs in the third, sparked by a leadoff triple from Hutchinson. Senior center fielder Alexa McNee drove her home with a single and eventually scored on a bunt single by junior left fielder Emily Dubiago. The single was the 50th career hit for Dubiago, who carries a .291 career batting average, including ,350 this season.

Freshman Anna Milillo (2-1) picked up the win with 5.2 shutout innings in relief, allowing two hits and two walks, while striking out one.

Hutchinson led the 11-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Gray and Bauer both went 2-for-4.
