Raptors hurl pair of one-hitters in doubleheader sweep of Albright

CAMDEN, N.J. (March 21, 2024) – Freshman pitcher Sammie Friel tossed a one-hitter in the nightcap, allowing just three unearned runs, after junior Lindsey Rodzon and freshman Anna Milillo combined for a one-hit shutout in the opener as the Rutgers University-Camden softball team swept Albright College in a non-conference doubleheader here Thursday.

The Scarlet Raptors won the opener, 8-0, in a game shortened to six innings by the eight-run mercy rule. They captured the nightcap, 7-3, as they evened their record at 7-7 with their third straight win. Rutgers-Camden has won five of its last six games.

Albright fell to 3-9.

With Saturday's weather promising to be a washout, the Scarlet Raptors have moved that day's scheduled doubleheader against SUNY-New Paltz up one day. The two teams will play a twinbill Friday, beginning at 5 p.m. in Camden.

Rutgers-Camden 8, Albright 0 (6 innings)

In a pre-determined pitching split, Rodzon hurled the first three innings for the win and Milillo picked up her first collegiate save by finishing off the combined shutout. Rodzon (1-4) allowed no hits and three walks, while striking out one. Milillo allowed only one infield single and one walk in her three innings.

The Scarlet Raptors scored the only run their pitchers needed in the bottom of the first inning after a leadoff walk to senior shortstop Meg Gray. She advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a single to center by sophomore second baseman Gianna Bauer.

The Raptors added two more runs in the third inning on a two-run single by junior third baseman Luci Hutchinson after loading the bases on two walks and a Bauer single.

An unearned run in the fifth inning made it a 4-0 game before the Scarlet Raptors scored four runs on one hit in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game early. They took advantage of four walks, two hit batsmen and a game-ending RBI single by Hutchinson.

For the game, Hutchinson went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Bauer was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Gray walked three times, had three runs scored and one RBI, while sophomore right fielder Ava Maloof went 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs and one RBI.

Rutgers-Camden 7, Albright 3

Friel (3-2) hurled no-hit ball until freshman shortstop Monica Hernandez led off the sixth inning with a single up the middle in the sixth inning. She advanced on a ground out and a sacrifice and scored on an errant pickoff throw to third base.

The Lions added two unearned runs in the seventh inning on a pair of walks and an outfield error.

Friel finished the cold day with a one-hitter, walking six and striking out seven.

Rutgers-Camden once again took the lead for good with a first-inning run. Gray led off the game getting hit by a pitch, was sacrificed to second by Maloof and scored on a single by Bauer. In the third inning, a leadoff double by Maloof led to another run as she came around to score on a pair of ground outs, with Hutchinson collecting an RBI.

The Scarlet Raptors added two unearned runs in the fourth inning on two walks and two infield errors and scored three times in the sixth inning on two hits, a walk and another error. Maloof singled home one of the runs and Hutchinson doubled home a pair of unearned runs.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Aasheim (1-3) took the loss, working six innings and allowing seven hits and four walks, while striking out one. Only three of the seven runs she allowed were earned.

Hutchinson matched her first-game batting line, once again going 2-for-4 with three RBIs as she finished the day with four hits and six RBIs. Maloof went 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI in the nightcap as she completed a 3-for-4 day with four runs and two RBIs.
