Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Raptor men, Virginia Wesleyan play to 0-0 tie

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia (Sept. 15, 2024) – The Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team wrapped up its tough weekend trip to Virginia here Sunday, coming away with a 0-0 tie against a strong Virginia Wesleyan University team.

The deadlock snapped the Scarlet Raptors' three-game losing streak and left them with a 3-3-1 record. It was their fourth shutout of the season, all with senior Sean Boen in goal. Boen made six saves, while Marlins sophomore keeper Ben Haynes had three saves.

The tie came against a Virginia Wesleyan team that entered the game at 5-1, outscoring its opponents, 13-3, in its six contests to start the season. It also came one day after the Raptors dropped a 2-0 decision at Christopher Newport University, which received votes toward the United Soccer Coaches Division III Top 25 poll on Tuesday.

The best scoring chance came in the 17th minute when the Marlins were awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box, but missed their shot by hitting the right post.

Virginia Wesleyan held a 10-2 margin in shots during the opening half, but only a 2-1 edge in shots on goal and in corner kicks. For the game, the Marlins held a 23-5 advantage in shots, but only a 6-3 lead in shots on goal. The bulk of the Marlins' second-half shots (a 13-3 advantage) came with Rutgers-Camden playing a man down in the final 28:28 of the game.

Virginia Wesleyan had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action on Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. game at Rosemont College.
