CAMDEN, N.J. (September 27, 2024) – Fireworks over Philadelphia lit up the sky late in the second half of the New Jersey Athletic Conference season opener between the Rutgers University-Camden and Ramapo College women's soccer teams Friday night.
The Scarlet Raptors hung on to finish the celebration as they captured a 1-0 victory over the Roadrunners, extending their unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1). It was their fifth shutout of the streak.
Rutgers-Camden improved to 5-3-2 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC, while Ramapo fell to 2-5-1 and 0-1.
The Scarlet Raptors lead the all-time series against Ramapo, 18-7-2 and have won their last 10 meetings against the Roadrunners.
Scoring opportunities were hard to find in a game where potential chances were either wasted or snuffed out by the defense, but the Scarlet Raptors notched the only goal they needed at 30:08. Following a throw-in, sophomore forward
Brianne Reeves headed the ball to freshman forward
Asia Horne about 25 yards out from the goal. Horne launched a drive that skimmed off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net for her third career goal. It was her second game-winning tally. The assist was the second for Reeves, tying for the team lead in that category.
The closest Ramapo came to tying the game was a header off the post, following a corner kick, late in the contest.
Rutgers-Camden finished with an 11-4 advantage in shots, but only a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. The Scarlet Raptors also held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
Both goalies, Raptor senior
Michaela Graham and Roadrunner sophomore
Gabby Matias, made two saves.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday with a 7 p.m. NJAC game at Rutgers-Newark.
