Rutgers-Camden has won four straight games and five of its last six against William Paterson, although the Pioneers lead the all-time series, 68-12.
The Scarlet Raptors scored the first eight points of the game, opened up a 14-1 lead and, after Paterson cut its gap to 18-15 and 20-17, scored 31 of the half's final 46 points. The Raptors led by as many as 21 points (51-30) on their way to a 51-32 halftime lead.
Paterson rallied in the second half and cut the gap to single digits, 61-53, with 12:22 remaining. When senior guard Andre Wells scored on a layup with 1:41 remaining, the Raptors' lead was sliced to 83-81. Gordon followed with a foul shot to make it an 84-81 game, but Wells continued his brilliant night with a layup to slice the gap to 84-83 with less than a minute remaining.
After a layup by the Raptors' junior guard
Eric Benjamin made it an 86-83 game, Wells hit the back end of two foul shots with 14 seconds remaining to cut the margin to 86-84 and set up a wild finish. A late Raptor turnover and a foul put Wells on the foul line with .9 seconds remaining and a chance to tie the game. After he missed his first shot, he purposefully missed the second, hoping for a chance to get the Pioneers a rebound. Instead, the ball went out of bounds for the Raptors' possession and a full-length inbound pass clinched the hard-fought win.
Junior forward
Cameron Downs led Rutgers-Camden with 19 points and Benjamin scored 15, while Sylvestre set his Raptor career high with 12 points. Pierre and Trusty-Smith both added 11 points.
Downs and Gordon finished with nine rebounds apiece, with junior forward
Cherif Kanoute adding eight boards. Trusty-Smith collected five assists to tie the Pioneers' Wells for game-high honors.
Wells had a stellar game for Paterson, scoring 34 points, including 20-for-26 at the foul line. Senior forward Tim Gjonballa netted 13 points, senior guard Naftali Valentin scored 11 and senior guard David Martinez added 10 for Paterson.
Rutgers-Camden held a 46-38 advantage off the boards and shot 27-for-57 (47.4 percent) from the floor and 24-for-38 (63.2) from the line. Paterson shot 26-for-61 (42.6) from the floor and 28-for-47 (59.6) from the line.
