GWYNEDD VALLEY, Penn. (February 25, 2025) – Rutgers University-Camden infielder
Frankie Romond was forced to sit out the entire 2024 baseball season with an injury.
Retaining his junior eligibility, Romond is quickly making up for lost time.
Romond went 5-for-5 with three runs, six RBIs and two stolen bases here Tuesday to lead a 13-hit attack as Rutgers-Camden raced past Gwynedd Mercy University, 14-2, in an eight-inning game.
The victory lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 3-0, while the Griffins fall to 1-3.
Romond had three singles, a double and a triple in his big day, missing only a home run to complete a cycle. His five-hit game was one shy of the single-game Rutgers-Camden record, shared by three players. It was the Raptors' first five-hit game since last season when his current teammate,
Giacomo Antonicello, had five hits against SUNY-Oneonta on March 12.
Romond's bat had plenty of help, including a 4-for-4 game with one run and two RBIs from senior first baseman
Diego Salazar. Salazar had a double among his four hits, while adding a walk. He had RBI singles in the sixth and seventh innings.
Senior shortstop
Billy Richards went 2-for-3 with a walk and one run scored.
The Scarlet Raptors put the game away early, scoring twice in the first inning and adding four runs in the second. Romond singled home the team's first run and added a three-run triple in the second inning. He collected RBI singles in the fourth and seventh innings.
The Scarlet Raptors exploded for five runs in the seventh inning on four walks, three hits, an error and a hit batsman.
The offensive outburst was more than enough support for junior
Ryan Rumsey, who hurled the first five innings in his 2025 debut. He allowed three hits and one unearned run, while striking out two. Junior
Dylan Oliver pitched a scoreless sixth inning and sophomore
Cian Phillips finished the game with two innings, allowing one run.
The Scarlet Raptors host Widener University in a 3:30 p.m. game Thursday.
