Ethan Carpenter threw seven innings to earn his fifth win of the season and third baseman
Ryan Nutley sparked the Rutgers University-Camden offense with a two-run home run in the first inning as the Scarlet Raptors defeated Stockton University, 11-3, in New Jersey Athletic Conference baseball action here Friday.
The win on the back end of the home-and-home series helped the Scarlet Raptors split the series after dropping a 14-3 decision in Galloway on Thursday. Rutgers-Camden pushed its record to 22-11 overall and 6-6 in the NJAC, while Stockton fell to 15-16 and 4-8.
Camden took the lead for good in the bottom of the first inning when second baseman
Frankie Romond led off with a double and Nutley blasted a two-run home run to center field. It was his first home run of the season.
The Scarlet Raptors added two more runs in the third inning on three straight singles by shortstop
Chris Smith, Romond and Nutley, with Nutley driving home his third run of the game. After a sacrifice from left fielder
Ryan Joseph, first baseman
Jack Murphy plated Romond with a sacrifice fly.
Stockton cut its deficit in half with a two-run fourth inning, using two walks, a single and back-to-back sacrifice flies, but Rutgers-Camden countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Smith squeezed home one run and Joseph added a two-run single.
Carpenter, meanwhile, worked through seven innings of five-hit ball, allowing two earned runs and walking six. He was aided by some big defensive plays as the Scarlet Raptors turned three double plays behind him, right fielder
Brandon Petrick made a big inning-ending catch in right-center to strand two runners in the third inning and Romond made a spectacular leaping catch of a line drive in the seventh. Carpenter raised his record to 5-2.
Leading, 7-2, the Scarlet Raptors put the game away with a four-run seventh inning that featured four hits a walk and a sacrifice fly. The frame featured an RBI double by center fielder
Steven Shaffer, a run-scoring single by Petrick, a sacrifice fly by freshman designated hitter
Will Gural and an RBI triple by catcher
Evan Carbone.
Romond finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs in the leadoff spot, while Nutley went 2-for-3 with two runs, two walks and three RBIs batting second in the lineup.
Joseph went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Petrick was 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs and one RBI.
Stockton finished with six hits against a trio of Raptor pitchers, with right fielder Nick Avagnano and third baseman Robbie Ford collecting two apiece.
Stockton starter Antonio Sansone (4-2) took the loss, allowing six hits, three walks and seven earned runs in four innings. He struck out five.
The Scarlet Raptors continue their NJAC schedule Saturday with an 11:30 a.m. doubleheader at Ramapo College in Mahwah.
