CAMDEN, N.J. (Jan. 29, 2026) – Mya Cabañas Montero (Utuado, PR/Florence Township Memorial) has been a leader at Rutgers University-Camden since her freshman year.

The junior Psychology major has been a member of the Rutgers-Camden Student-Athlete Advisory Committee since her freshman year, served on the SAAC Leadership Committee as a sophomore and is the current SAAC President. She also has lettered with the Scarlet Raptors' athletic programs in cross country, softball and both indoor and outdoor track and field.

All of her accomplishments have prepared Cabañas Montero for a new leadership role. She has been appointed as a member of the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as a representative of the New Jersey Athletic Conference. She will serve a two-year term through January 22, 2028.

"We are incredibly proud of Mya for being selected to serve on the National Division III SAAC Committee representing the NJAC," said Rutgers-Camden Assistant Director of Athletics Haley Shinn, who also serves as the school's SAAC advisor. "This is a well-deserved honor and a testament to her leadership, character, and commitment to advocating for the Division III student-athlete experience. Mya consistently demonstrates a strong voice, thoughtful perspective, and a genuine passion for making a positive impact, and we are confident she will represent Rutgers-Camden and the conference with integrity and purpose on the national stage."

A Dean's List and Honor Roll student at Rutgers-Camden, Cabañas Montero has long been a leader and multi-talented student athlete. During her scholastic days at Florence Township Memorial High School, she was an Honor Roll student, captured Future Leader and academic award recognition, earned honors in AP Language and Culture and captured varsity letters in soccer, softball and track & field. As a soccer star she earned New Jersey Player of the Week and New Jersey Goalie of the Week recognition.

Those talents have served her well at Rutgers-Camden. In addition to her academic and SAAC roles, Cabañas Montero has captured three letters with the Scarlet Raptors' cross country program. She is competing in her second season with the Rutgers-Camden indoor track and field program, where she posted her PR in the weight throw (9.55 meters) at the Wagner Seahawk Shootout on December 12. She also has earned one letter apiece with the outdoor track and field program, as well as the Scarlet Raptors' softball program.

Mya is the daughter of Reynaldo Cabañas and Zahira Montero of Florence.
