CAMDEN, N.J. (March 11, 2026) – In a game that had a little of everything, including a 10-run inning and a pair of single-game record-tying feats, the final decision was left to the weather.
The Rutgers University-Camden baseball team defeated Widener University, 19-7, here Wednesday in a game that started in warm sunny weather and ended up being called with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning by rain and lightning.
The win evens Rutgers-Camden's record at 4-4 before the Scarlet Raptors embark on an eight-game spring break trip to Florida. They open on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Auburndale against Mount Union, which was ranked #21 in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 poll this week.
Rutgers-Camden pounded out 18 hits for the second straight day, had a 10-run second inning and led, 13-0 before the Pride scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third inning. Along the way, sophomore first baseman
Danny Torres Jr. tied a program record of five walks, set by Rutgers-Camden Hall of Famer Rocky Gianvito against Philadelphia Textile on May 2, 1961. Another record that was tied came when sophomore right fielder
Gavin McCaffrey reached base three times as a hit batsman, a mark shared by five other players.
Junior second baseman
Austin Dubler went 5-for-6 with three runs and four RBIs, one hit shy of the single-game program mark shared by three players.
The Scarlet Raptors scored three times in the first inning after Dubler hit a one-out single and stole second. He scored on a home run to center field by sophomore designated hitter
Jake Slusarski. The first-inning hits by Dubler and Slusarski extended their season-opening hitting streaks to eight games, the longest on the team.
The Raptors added their third run of the inning when Torres walked and scored on a double by sophomore third baseman
Will Gural.
Rutgers-Camden's 10-run second inning featured eight hits, two walks (both by Torres), a hit batsman and a catcher's interference. It was the team's biggest inning since an 11-run first inning in a 15-9 win over York College of Pennsylvania on March 6, 2025. The inning included two-run doubles by Dubler and sophomore catcher
Mason Blizzard.
All that support was more than enough for freshman pitcher
Gabe McCracken, who earned his first collegiate decision in his second career start. McCracken, who was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie Pitcher of the Week on Monday after throwing five shutout innings in his start against York last Wednesday, worked five innings against Widener, allowing seven hits, four runs (only two earned) and four walks. He struck out six.
In addition to Dubler's offense, sophomore shortstop
Chris Smith went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI, one day after going 4-for-4 in a 14-6 win over Centenary. Junior left fielder
Matt McAleer went 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs and three stolen bases. Slusarski went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, while Gural was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and one run.
Freshman third baseman Brandon Yoder paced Widener's 10-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBIs.
