Raptors' rally falls short against nationallly-ranked Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Penn. (March 25, 2026) – The Rutgers University-Camden baseball team fell behind nationally-ranked Gettysburg College by five runs midway through its non-conference game here Wednesday before throwing a scare into the Bullets with a four-run sixth inning. That was as close as the Scarlet Raptors came, however, as they lost to Gettysburg, 10-7.

Rutgers-Camden falls to 8-9 after back-to-back losses in two days against nationally-ranked Swarthmore and Gettysburg.

The Bullets, ranked #21 in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 poll and receiving 60 votes toward the NCAA Div. III Coaches' Top 30 Poll, improved to 17-3.

Rutgers-Camden jumped on the board quickly with a three-run first inning, sparked by singles from sophomore right fielder Gavin McCaffrey, junior second baseman Austin Dubler and sophomore designated hitter Jake Slusarski to load the bases. Junior center fielder Jacob Watson forced home a run when he was hit by a pitch and sophomore shortstop Chris Smith drilled a two-run single up the middle.

Gettysburg countered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning on four singles, including RBI hits from junior designated hitter Dominick Balsamo and junior first baseman Jack Amirata.

The Bullets took the lead with a two-run second inning on a pair of walks and RBI singles from freshman right fielder Mike Coleman and junior center fielder Will Stellato. Gettysburg added four runs in the fourth inning to make it an 8-3 game, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Amirata before junior third baseman Will Roche cleared the bases with a three-run double.

Rutgers-Camden rallied with four runs in the top of the sixth inning, sparked by a leadoff walk to senior catcher Evan Carbone. One out later, McCaffrey, Dubler and Slusarski strung together consecutive singles, with Dubler collecting an RBI. Watson followed with another bases-loaded hit by pitch, Smith singled home a run and sophomore third baseman Will Gural plated another run with a ground out.

The Bullets got two of those runs back in the bottom of the eighth inning on a single by Amirata and a two-run home run from senior catcher Brendan Laqui. The Raptors brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning after a leadoff double by Gural and Carbone reaching as a hit batsman, but the Bullets worked out of the jam to notch their 17th win in 20 games.

Gettysburg collected 14 hits in the game, with Stellato leading the way with a 4-for-5 day. He scored two runs and had one RBI.

Dubler went 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs and one RBI to lead a 14-hit Rutgers-Camden attack. McCaffrey, Slusarski, Smith, Gural and Carbone all added two hits.

Freshman Jacob Guthmiller (1-0) earned the win in relief for Gettysburg, working 1.2 scoreless innings and allowing only one hit. Sophomore Ethan Mitnick worked out of the ninth inning jam to earn his second save. He pitched two-thirds of a scoreless inning, striking out one batter.

Raptor freshman starter Anthony Alessandroni (1-2) took the loss, hurling 2.2 innings and allowing seven hits, four earned runs and three walks. He struck out one.

Rutgers-Camden junior Anthony Angelo Jr., the third of four Raptor pitchers, was the most effective, working 3.1 shutout innings. He allowed three hits and struck out two.

Rutgers-Camden, the defending New Jersey Athletic Conference champion, opens its NJAC schedule on Saturday with an 11:30 a.m. doubleheader at William Paterson University.
