Raptors turn record six double plays in NJAC win over #11/11 Kean

UNION, N.J. (April 23, 2026) – The Rutgers University-Camden baseball team doubled up on its fun here Thursday as it turned a club record six double plays in a 14-5 win over nationally-ranked Kean University.

The Scarlet Raptors' six double plays were one shy of the Division III record of seven, set by Wesley against Mary Washington in a 10-inning game on April 19, 2013. The six DPs tied for the second-best mark in Division III history, held by four other teams: Rowan against Wartburg in a 16-inning game on May 29, 2005, Keene State against Plymouth State on May 2, 2000; Grinnell against Hardin-Simmons on March 19, 1998 and Johns Hopkins against Muhlenberg on April 30, 1994.

The victory lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 16-20 overall and 8-7 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Kean, which is ranked 11th in both the NCAA Div. III Baseball Coaches Poll and the D3baseball.com poll, dips to 26-10-1 overall and 9-6 in the NJAC.

The Scarlet Raptors turned double plays in the first, second, fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings, with sophomore first baseman Ryan Joseph participating in all six twin killings to set a new individual program record. The old mark of five was set by Rick Fougeray in the second game of an April 12, 2008, doubleheader against William Paterson University. Raptor sophomore shortstop Chris Smith tied that old mark, while junior second baseman Austin Dubler participated in four double plays.

While the defense was busy keeping the Cougars off the scoreboard, the Scarlet Raptor offense was exploding for 18 hits and 14 runs. Joseph also led the offensive attack, going 4-for-6 with two doubles, four runs and one RBI. Sophomore catcher Mason Blizzard  went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and four RBIs, while junior center fielder Jacob Watson was 3-for-6 with two runs, one RBI and one stolen base. Dubler also went 3-for-6 with a double and one RBI.

Sophomore third baseman Michael McGinley went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI and junior left fielder Matt McAleer went 2-for-5 with one run and three RBIs.

Junior pitcher Austin Wokock was the beneficiary of the Raptors' offensive explosion and defensive play, working seven innings of 10-hit ball. He walked four, struck out four and allowed four earned runs while raising his record to 6-1.

With the game tied at 1-1 entering the fourth inning, Rutgers-Camden took advantage of four hits and a Kean error to score four runs, with the big hits being a two-run double by Blizzard and a two-run single by McAleer.

After Kean bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, Rutgers-Camden immediately put up another four-run inning, collecting six hits in the fifth inning. Joseph had an RBI double, while Blizzard, sophomore right fielder Gavin McCaffrey and Dubler added RBI singles.

The Raptors added two unearned runs in the sixth and then scored single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

A pair of juniors, catcher Jude Clough and shortstop Dominic Masino, had three hits apiece in Kean's 13-hit attack.

The Scarlet Raptors return to action on Friday when they host Kean University in a 3:30 p.m. NJAC game.
