MEDIA, Pa. - The Rutgers-Camden women's tennis team earned its first victory of the season Friday afternoon, defeating Penn State Brandywine, 5-2, at the Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Courts.
The Scarlet Raptors improved to 1-1 on the season, while Penn State Brandywine fell to 0-1.
Rutgers-Camden captured two of the three doubles matches to start the day. At No. 1 doubles, Leila O'Brien and Zora Chatman battled to a 7-6 victory over Samma Zahran and Tamara Fritz. Jill Jaugan and Liz Brown added a convincing 6-1 victory over Natalie DiMario and Madison Ferguson at No. 2 doubles.
Penn State Brandywine earned its doubles win at the No. 3 spot, where Sofia Guzman and Valerie Woodrow defeated Elif Ozbay and Elena O'Brien, 6-4.
The Scarlet Raptors continued their strong performance in singles play, winning four of the six matches.
Jaugan rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Fritz at No. 2 singles, while Ozbay posted an identical 6-1, 6-1 decision against Ferguson at the No. 4 spot. Brown also earned a straight-set victory, topping Guzman, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5 singles.
O'Brien provided the Scarlet Raptors with the day's most dramatic victory at No. 3 singles. After dropping the opening set to DiMario, 6-3, O'Brien answered with a 6-3 win in the second set before dominating the match tiebreaker, 10-2.
Penn State Brandywine earned its singles victories at the No. 1 and No. 6 positions. Zahran defeated Chatman, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1, while Woodrow topped Elena O'Brien, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 6.
