Christian Scafidi brings a wealth of baseball experience to Rutgers-Camden as he enters his second season with the Scarlet Raptors’ coaching staff this spring.
A former pitcher at the University of Pennsylvania and Notre Dame University, Scafidi also has played professional baseball in the Frontier League and coached at UPenn.
During his scholastic days at Highland Regional High School, Scafidi earned four varsity letters apiece in baseball and basketball. He was an All-Conference First Team player in both sports. An All Carino Third Team All-South Jersey basketball player, he also captured Scholar Athlete honors for basketball in 2016. He was a South Jersey Baseball Coaches Association All-South Jersey starting pitcher in 2016.
Scafidi continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a three-year starter and a two-year baseball team captain. He captured Ivy League Pitcher of the Year and was a unanimous All-Ivy First Team player in 2019, in addition to being named the 2019 Big 5 Pitcher of the Year.
After graduating from Penn in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in communication, Scafidi obtained his Masters in Business Management at the University of Notre Dame in 2021. During his graduate year, he was a weekend starter for the Fighting Irish and posted a 1-0 record and a 1.50 ERA in six innings before undergoing season-ending surgery.
Beyond the collegiate level, Scafidi was a member of the 2021 Italian National Team, participating in the Honkbalweek baseball tournament in the Netherlands as spring training for the World Baseball Classic. He also was a member of the 2022 Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) champions.
In professional baseball, the right-handed pitcher was a member of Fortitudo Bologna (Italian Serie A) in 2021, played for both the Rocky Mountain Vibes and the Les Aigles des Trois Rivieres in 2022 and the Lake Erie Crushers in 2023.
The Director of Pitching Development at the University of Pennsylvania from August 2021 through May 2022, he helped the Quakers post a 33-15 record, win the regular-season Ivy League championship with a 17-4 record and host the Ivy League Championship Series. The Quakers led the Ivy League in ERA with a staff that included Ivy League Pitcher of the Year Kevin Eaise.
