Former Gloucester Catholic High School standout and long-time baseball coach John Yowler joins the Rutgers University-Camden coaching staff for the 2022 season.
Yowler returns to South Jersey after serving last season as an assistant baseball coach for Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina.
A 2017 inductee into the Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame, Yowler was a three-sport standout (baseball, football and basketball) at Gloucester Catholic High School, graduating in 1980. The star pitcher led the Rams to a 24-0 record and a state championship in 1980, while batting a stellar .676. That 1980 Rams team that was voted the top South Jersey baseball team of the 20th century by the Courier-Post newspaper. He accepted a baseball scholarship to the University of Nebraska.
Yowler also attended Valencia Community College and was selected as the fourth overall pick in the 1982 draft by the San Diego Padres, then was picked in the 1983 draft out of Baltimore City Community College by the Kansas City Royals. He played two seasons in the Royals’ organization before a career-ending injury.
Yowler has served as a pitching coach at several schools, including New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Rowan University in 2007 and 2008. He also was a pitching coach at Cumberland County College from 2013-19, leading the Dukes to three College World Series appearances and the 2019 national title. Six of his Cumberland County pitchers were selected in the Major League draft.
Yowler also has served as an assistant coach at West Deptford, helping the Eagles win two conference championships and one sectional title during his two seasons. From 1999-2001, he assisted the Gloucester Catholic baseball program, helping the Rams post a 93-9 record, win three state titles and capture the 2000 national championship.
