R.J. McGettigan stepped into a new role with the Rutgers University-Camden baseball program in 2024, joining the team as an assistant coach after a long collegiate career with the Scarlet Raptors. He returns for his second season this spring.
McGettigan played in 61 games for the Scarlet Raptors over five seasons (2019-23), including the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign. Although his career was hampered by numerous injuries, he started 47 games, hitting .207 with a .339 on-base percentage, 18 runs and 16 RBIs. An outstanding defensive first baseman, he posted a .990 career fielding percentage, collecting 181 putouts and nine assists, while participating in 18 double plays.
McGettigan served as one of the Scarlet Raptors’ tri-captains in 2022, when he played in 31 games, starting 25. He compiled a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage for the second time in his career, collecting 47 putouts in as many chances, while participating in five double plays.
A Dean’s List student, McGettigan was a six-time member of the Rutgers-Camden Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. He graduated from the school in 2023 with a degree in Childhood Studies.
During his scholastic days, McGettigan was a three-year varsity baseball letterman at Saints John Neumann and Maria Goretti Catholic High School. He earned All-Catholic League Third Team recognition and also was a First Honors student for three years and a Second Honors student once.
