Biography

A graduate student who joined the Rutgers-Camden baseball program for his final year of eligibility, Jacob Shapley became the Scarlet Raptors’ closer during the 2025 season. He played a huge role on the team’s New Jersey Athletic Conference championship run, posting a 2-0 record and one save as the Raptors went 4-0 in the conference playoffs to win their first NJAC title ever.
 
Academics: Dean’s List student and member of the Rutgers-Camden Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for the 2025 Spring semester…One of only 41 athletes on the 180-member 2025 Spring AD Honor Roll to earn a perfect 4.0 GPA.
 
Baseball 2025: Pitched in 18 games, all in relief, to tie for the sixth-highest single-season number of appearances in program history…Led the team in appearances and also had a team-leading five saves, tied for the program’s fourth-highest season total…Posted a 4-2 record and a 5.11 ERA…Walked 18, hit nine and struck out 40…Worked 37 innings, allowing 43 hits and 21 earned runs…Had a 1.000 fielding percentage with two putouts and three assists in five chances, while also contributing to one double play…Made his Scarlet Raptor debut in the second game of the season-opening doubleheader against Immaculata (Feb. 22), earning the win while pitching four innings and allowing six hits, four runs, two walks and two hit batsmen, while fanning four…Hurled .2 perfect innings in the team’s 9-8 loss to Widener (Feb. 27)…Collected his first save against nationally-ranked Cortland (March 9), working 3.2 innings and allowing five hits, two walks, one hit batsman and two earned runs, while striking out five…Saved a 9-7 win over Mount Union (March 15), working two innings and allowing one hit, one hit batsman and one run, while striking out two…Allowed a walk, a hit and one run in .1 innings against nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins (March 17)…Allowed five hits and three runs in 2.1 innings against nationally-ranked Denison (March 21), while striking out two…Hurled one shutout inning, allowing one hit, to save a 4-3 win over New Jersey City (March 29, Game One) and followed by saving a 6-4 victory in the nightcap, striking out the only batter he faced to strand two runners on base…Took the loss in a 5-4 game at The College of New Jersey, allowing a solo home run in one inning, while striking out one…Allowed three hits, one walk and one run without registering an out to take a 3-2 loss at nationally-ranked Kean (April 5, Game Two)…Earned a win against nationally-ranked Rowan (April 14), working 3.2 innings and allowing four hits, two walks, one hit batsman and two runs…Threw two shutout innings, allowing only one hit and striking out five during the Raptors’ 3-0 loss at Ramapo College (April 19, Game Two)…Hurled a shutout inning, allowing one hit, one walk and a hit batsman, while striking out one against Montclair State (April 24)…Had his longest relief stint of the year without a decision, working six innings and allowing six hits, two walks and two runs, while striking out eight in the Raptors’ loss to William Paterson (April 26, Game Two)…Turned in a masterful performance in the NJAC playoffs, going 2-0 with one save as Rutgers-Camden swept to the NJAC championship with four wins: Hurled 1.1 shutout innings, allowing one hit, while picking up the win at the Raptors rallied to beat top-seeded and nationally-ranked Kean (May 1), earned the win with 2.1 shutout innings against Montclair State (May 3), while allowing three walks, one hit and striking out three, and capped the championship run with a save against The College of New Jersey (May 9), working 2.1 shutout innings, while allowing two hits and three walks with three strikeouts…Overall, worked six shutout innings in the NJAC playoffs…Closed his career working three innings as the Scarlet Raptors were eliminated from the NCAA playoffs by Rensselaer (May 17), allowing four hits, two hit batsmen, one walk and four runs, while striking out four.
 
Pre-Rutgers: Pitched at Barton College (Wilson, NC) during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, making 26 appearances, including eight starts…Hurled 64.1 innings, posting a 6-3 record and a 5.46 ERA…During the 2023 season, started eight games out of his 16 appearances, going 4-3 with a 5.91 ERA in 42.2 innings…Walked 22, struck out 31 and allowed 50 hits…During the 2024 campaign, made 10 relief appearances, going 2-0 with a 4.57 ERA in 21.2 innings…Walked seven, struck out 18 and allowed 16 hits…Started his collegiate career at the Cumberland campus of Rowan College South Jersey, earning First Team All-American honors in 2022.
