Biography

John Guccione started every game at second base for the Scarlet Raptors during the brief 2020 season, which was cancelled after six games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Guccione, who became a regular starter during the 2019 campaign, has appeared in 58 career games, starting 37. He has compiled a .240 batting average and 87 career assists.
A Dean’s List student, he has received numerous academic honors at Rutgers-Camden.
 
Academics: New Jersey Athletic Conference Academic Honorable Mention for the 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20 scholastic years…ECAC Academic Honor Roll for the 2018 Spring semester…Rutgers-Camden Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for the 2017 Spring, 2017 Fall, 2018 Spring, 2018 Fall, 2019 Spring, 2019 Fall and 2020 Spring semesters…Dean’s List…One of only 16 athletes on the 148-member 2019 Fall AD Honor Roll to record a perfect 4.0 GPA.
 
Baseball 2020: Started all six Rutgers-Camden games at second base during the 2020 season, which was shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic…Hit .115 with three runs and five RBIs, while leading the club with 26 at bats…Tied for the team lead with 15 assists, while adding 12 putouts and three double plays…Had his best offensive game in the nightcap of a doubleheader against Immaculata (Feb. 23), going 2-for-5 with one run, one walk and two RBIs…Contributed to the Raptors’ program-record 12-run fifth inning in that game with a two-run single…In the nightcap of a doubleheader against Oneonta (March 1), went 1-for-4 with two RBIs...Notched nine assists against Neumann (March 9), one shy of the single-game program record, while adding three putouts.
 
Baseball 2019: Posted a career-high .294 batting average while playing in 32 games…Made 28 starts, including 24 at second base…Had 19 runs, 17 RBIs, three doubles and a .324 slugging percentage…Added 10 walks and four HBP to compile a .373 on-base percentage…Collected two sacrifices and two sacrifice flies…Defensively, notched 63 putouts, 61 assists, 14 double plays and a .947 fielding percentage…Had nine multiple-hit games, the fifth-highest total on the team…Compiled an eight-game hitting streak from March 28-April 9 (15-for-32, .469, with eight runs and eight RBIs)…Went 3-for-4 with one run against Rutgers-Newark (April 8)…That game was sandwiched between a 2-for-5, two-RBI game against New Jersey City (April 6, Game 2) and a 2-for-3, one-run, two-RBI, two-HBP contest against Widener (April 9)…Went 2-for-3 with one run, one walk and three RBIs against Montclair State (April 13, Game 1)…Had his busiest defensive day against Kean (April 20, Game 1) with four putouts and six assists…Also had six assists against Cortland (March 2)…Collected a season-high five putouts and added three assists against both York (April 14) and Immaculata (April 22).
 
Baseball 2018: Played in 13 games, starting one apiece at shortstop and third base…Hit .235 with a .316 on-base percentage…Scored two runs, walked twice and collected two RBIs…Had three putouts, 10 assists, one double play and four errors…Made his season debut as a pinch-hitter (0-for-1) and second baseman at Stevenson University (March 4), collecting two assists…In a doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark (April 7), went 1-for-2 with a sacrifice and one RBI after entering the first game as a defensive sub at shortstop…Had four assists in the contest…Started the second game at shortstop and went 1-for-3 with one walk, one run, one putout and one assist…Collected a pinch-hit single in the eighth inning against Stevens Institute of Technology (April 8)…Went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter and had two assists at shortstop against Stockton University (April 20)…Collected a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth inning at Kean University (April 29) and later added one assist while playing second base…Started the Raptors’ final game of the season at third base against St. Joseph’s-Long Island (May 11), going 0-for-3 with one walk, one run scored and one putout.
 
Baseball 2017: Appeared in seven games at second base, third base and as a pinch-hitter…Started one game at third base…Went 0-for-9 (.000) and had one assist…Made collegiate debut as a defensive replacement at third base against Mitchell College (Feb. 24)…Made his lone start at third against Elmira College (Feb. 25), going 0-for-3…Went 0-for-2 at second base and had one assist and one error against Suffolk University (March 17).
