Biography

After a stellar rookie season in 2017, Matthew Stoots had another solid year as a sophomore at Rutgers-Camden. In his two seasons with the Scarlet Raptors, he has played in 74 games, making 73 starts, and compiled a .292 batting average, 80 hits, 49 RBIs and 38 runs scored. Defensively, Stoots has 134 career assists, needing only 66 to become the 12th player in program history to reach the 200 milestone.
 
Stoots also has appeared in six career games on the mound, including three starts. He owns a 3.38 ERA and an 0-2 record in 13-1/3 innings.
 
Baseball 2018: Started all 43 Rutgers-Camden games, tied for the sixth-highest single-season appearance mark in program history and only one game behind the five-way tie for first place…Made 38 starts at third base and five at first base…Hit .282 with seven doubles, two triples and one home run…Had 30 RBIs and 21 runs scored…Compiled a .368 slugging percentage and a .326 on-base percentage…Was successful on seven of his eight stolen base attempts…Collected 68 putouts and was third on the team with 82 assists…Helped to turn six double plays…Had 13 multiple-hit games, including a 4-for-4 contest with one RBI against Misericordia (April 22)…In his next game, coming against Moravian College (April 24), he went 3-for-3 with one run and four RBIs, including a tie-breaking three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to spark a 7-3 Raptor victory…Those two games were part of his season-high 11-game hitting streak (April 18-29) in which he went 22-for-45 (489) with 17 RBIs and seven runs…That hitting streak included eight multi-hit games…Collected nine multiple-RBI games, including the four against Moravian and a trio of three-RBI games against Olivet College (March 11) and Kean University (both on April 26 and April 29)…Had his season high of 11 putouts in a pair of games while playing first base: against York College of Pennsylvania (May 2) and Kean (May 5)…Had a high of seven assists at Rowan University (April 12)…Scored a pair of runs in five different games…In his lone mound appearance, tossed a scoreless frame in relief against Kean University (April 29), allowing one hit and one walk, while striking out two.
 
Baseball 2017: Started 30 of his 31 games, mainly at third base, and hit .306 with a .360 slugging percentage and a .355 on-base percentage…Finished third on the team with 19 RBIs and tied for seventh with 17 runs scored…Had three doubles, one home run, seven walks and three HBP…Tied for second on the team with three sacrifice flies…Collected 15 putouts and finished third on the team with 52 assists…On the mound, worked 12-1/3 innings over five appearances (three starts) and went 0-2 with a 3.65 ERA…Had five walks and 11 strikeouts…Finished third on the team with 11 multiple-hit games and added three multiple-RBI games… In his collegiate debut against Mitchell College (Feb. 24), went 3-for-3 with one walk, one RBI and two assists, helping him earn the New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for Feb. 27…Had the most RBIs in one game on the Raptors when he went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, one walk and five RBIs against Trinity College (March 16)…That game was part of his season-high seven-game hitting streak from March 12-18 (13-for-26 (.500) that helped him earn his second NJAC Rookie of the Week honor and add recognition as the ECAC Div. III Metro Rookie of the Week and the school’s Raptor of the Week, with all honors coming March 20…That period included a 2-for-5 performance against Eastern Connecticut State University (March 15), when he doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to help the Scarlet Raptors beat the traditional Division III power, 6-5…During his seven-game hitting streak, he had a 3-for-4, two-run performance against Oswego State (March 13) and four consecutive two-hit games…Had a big doubleheader against Rutgers-Newark (April 8), going 1-for-5 with three RBIs in the opener and 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI in the nightcap…Went 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs, while hitting his first collegiate home run, against DeSales University (April 11)…Went 2-for-5 in the opener of a doubleheader against New Jersey City University (April 29)…Made his collegiate pitching debut with two scoreless innings of relief against Elmira College (Feb. 25), allowing one hit and two walks, while striking out two…Also had a scoreless relief outing against FDU-Florham March 30 (one inning, one hit, two strikeouts)…Took the loss in a three-inning start against Endicott College (March 14), allowing nine hits, one walk and seven runs – only two earned – while striking out two….In his other start of the season, was pinned with a 4-2 loss at The College of New Jersey (April 10) despite allowing only six hits and three earned runs in six innings, walking two and striking out five…In his final start of the season, was injured and left a game against Ramapo College (April 15, Game One) after only one-third of an inning.
 
High School: Captured three varsity baseball letters at Pemberton High School for Coach Eric Talarico…Graduated in 2016.
