Biography

A two-sport athlete at Rutgers-Camden, Tyrell Russell earned his third men’s basketball letter over the 2019-20 winter to go with his one letter in outdoor track and field.
 
Russell has played in 56 basketball games for the Scarlet Raptors, starting five, and averaging 3.1 points and 0.8 rebounds. He is 31-for-90 (.344) from three-point range in his career.
 
Academics: ECAC Academic Honor Roll for the Spring 2018 semester; Rutgers-Camden Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, 2017 Fall,  2018 Spring, 2019 Fall and 2020 Spring semesters…Dean’s List for the 2019 Fall and 2020 Spring semesters…One of 47 athletes on the 171-member 2020 Spring AD Honor Roll to post a 4.0 GPA.
 
Basketball 2019-20: Played in 21 games…Averaged 0.9 points and 0.4 rebounds…Collected four assists and one steal…Scored four points and collected his career high of three assists against Rosemont (Nov. 10)…Had two rebounds apiece in games against Stockton (Dec. 4), William Paterson (Dec. 7) and The College of New Jersey (Jan. 4)…Scored a season-high five points in the Stockton game, while also adding one assist…Hit his only three-point attempt to score three points against Baruch (Dec. 9)…Also had three points against TCNJ in the Jan. 4 game and against Stockton (Jan. 29).
 
Basketball 2018-19: Played in 22 games, starting five…Averaged 6.5 points (sixth on the team) and 1.4 rebounds…Added eight steals and four assists…Shot 50-for-113 (.442) from the floor, including 25-for-64 (.391) from three-point range…Shot 17-for-29 (.586) from the foul line…Produced six double-digit games in scoring, including a career-high 19 points against William Paterson University (Dec. 1), when he shot 7-for-13 from the floor, including 3-for-6 from three-point range, and 2-for-2 from the foul line…Had an 18-point game against New Jersey City University (Feb. 9), including 4-for-5 shooting from three-point range…During a four-game span from Nov. 20-Dec. 1, averaged 15.0 points, scoring in double digits four straight times…Collected a career-high four rebounds against Gwynedd Mercy University (Dec. 10)…Had career highs of two steals against Kean University (Dec. 8) and two assists against Stockton University (Jan. 23)…Collected three or more treys on five occasions.
Outdoor Track 2018: Competed in six spring meets, participating in the triple jump at every meet and in the long jump on five occasions…Made his Scarlet Raptor track debut on March 24 at the Delaware Classic, finishing 13th of 16 in the long jump (5.46 meters) and seventh of seven in the triple jump (11.35 meters)…Finished 14th of 15 in the long jump (5.58 meters) and seventh of nine in the triple jump (a PR of 12.13 meters) at the Oscar Moore Open (April 6)…Competed in the triple jump (12.03 meters, 10th of 13) at the Osprey Open (April 13)…Finished 32nd of 52 long jumpers (5.73 meters) and 16th of 18 triple jumpers (11.89 meters) at the Widener Invitational (April 21)…At the two-day New Jersey Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, placed 14th of 14 in the long jump (5.56 meters on May 5) and 10th of 10 in the triple jump (11.66 meters on May 6)…Closed his season at the Swarthmore Final Qualifier, posting a PR of 5.83 meters in the long jump (tying for 18th of 19 athletes) and placing 16th of 16 in the triple jump (11.90 meters).
 
Basketball 2017-18: Appeared in 13 games off the bench…Scored 11 points (0.8 ppg) and notched three rebounds (all off the defensive boards) for a 0.2 rebounding average…Shot 3-for-4 from the foul line (.750)…Made his collegiate debut playing two minutes at Neumann University (Nov. 15)…Scored his first points and had his top offensive game at Rowan University (Nov. 29), shooting 2-for-2 from the floor, including 1-for-1 from three-point range, for five points…Added one point (1-for-2 from the foul line) and his first collegiate rebound at Baruch College (Dec. 30), while playing his season high of 10 minutes…Shot 2-for-2 from the foul line for two points against Ramapo College (Feb. 8)…Shot 1-for-2 from the foul line for three points at Montclair State University (Feb. 14).
 
High School: Captured 10 varsity letters as a multi-sport star at Pennsauken High School, including four for track and three apiece for basketball and football…Two-time All-Conference…Received a captain award and Most Improved Player for basketball…Received an Athlete of the Week and a state champion in track…Earned a 4.0 GPA as a senior and received Student of the Month for the English Department…Graduated in 2017 with a cumulative 3.5 GPA.
