Vol. Assistant Coach Mike Ryan (3rd season)
High School: Cherokee
College: Rutgers University-Camden (2017)
Major: Criminal Justice
Arguably the finest player in the history of the Rutgers-Camden men’s soccer program, Mike Ryan returns to the coaching staff this season, three years after he finished his highly-decorated and record-setting career as a Scarlet Raptor. He joined the coaching staff in 2017.
The all-time New Jersey Athletic Conference men’s soccer goal-scoring leader with 75, Ryan added 16 assists to place third on the NJAC’s career point-scoring list (166 points). Not only did Ryan finish his Rutgers-Camden career as the school’s all-time leader in goals, points and game-winning goals, but his 75 goals passed the previous NJAC mark of 74 by Kean’s Fred Guiran (1990-92).
Ryan is the only player in the history of the Rutgers University-Camden men’s soccer program to be honored as an All-American by two organizations in the same season, and he accomplished that feat twice in his career.
Ryan capped his stellar career in 2015, earning berths on both the D3soccer.com and NSCAA All-America Third Teams. He also accomplished the dual honor in 2013 when he was a First Team All-American on both the D3soccer.com and NSCAA teams after leading the Scarlet Raptors to an amazing 23-1-2 season and a berth in the NCAA title game.
Ryan started his career earning NSCAA Third Team All-America honors as a freshman in 2012, giving him a total of five different All-America honors in his outstanding four-year Raptor career.
Ryan finished his senior season with 18 goals, three assists and 39 points as he led the Scarlet Raptors in scoring for the fourth consecutive season. Four of his goals were game winners, extending his own program record to 23 career game-winning goals. He also holds Rutgers-Camden’s records with 75 goals and 166 points in his career, while tying Joe Auleta (2011-14) for the program mark of 96 games started. He started every contest in his career. He finished one shy of Auleta’s program record for most overall games.
Ryan’s senior season included honors as the College Player of the Year by the South Jersey Soccer Coaches’ Association, the Offensive Player of the Year by both the NJAC and the ECAC Division III Metro Region, and First Team honors with both organizations. He also was a NSCAA South Atlantic Region First Team player and a member of the Cialella Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team (Sept. 12-13 at Rutgers-Camden). He earned Offensive Player of the Week honors from both the NJAC (Sept. 28) and the ECAC Division III Metro Region (Sept. 30).
During his record-setting four-year career, Ryan led the Scarlet Raptors to a berth in the NJAC championship game every season, with Rutgers-Camden winning three times. The Raptors went to three NCAA tournaments, highlighted by reaching the 2013 national championship game, and they also won the 2014 ECAC Metro/Upstate title. Ryan was named the Most Outstanding Player of that ECAC Metro/Upstate tournament and he also captured a berth on the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team in 2013.
Rutgers-Camden posted a phenomenal 70-19-8 record during Ryan’s career, while playing one of the toughest schedules in the country.
During the 2015 campaign, Ryan started all 24 games for the 14-8-2 Scarlet Raptors, who earned their fifth straight trip to the NJAC championship game and won their fourth NJAC title in five years.
Ryan also set a program record with an eight-game scoring streak (Oct. 10-Nov. 10, 2012), during which time he produced nine goals and three assists. That streak included one of his two career five-game goal-scoring streaks.
Among the program’s single-season records, Ryan owns four of the top six point totals, including the program record of 48 points (22 goals, four assists) in 2013. He has four of the top seven single-season marks for goals, including the record of 22 in 2013, and his production also ranks among the leaders for game-winning goals each year. He shares the season record of nine game-winning goals, scoring nine in 2013 to tie Mitch Grotti’s 2011 mark.
Ryan also shares the single-season record for games started, as he was among five players to start all 26 games for the 2013 NCAA finalist team. He also started 24 games in both 2014 and 2015, tying for the seventh-highest total.
One of the Scarlet Raptors’ team tri-captains during the 2015 campaign, Ryan exploded for four goals and one assist against Misericordia University (Sept. 23), setting his career high with nine points, tied for the third-best single-game total in program history. It was his fourth career hat trick and second of the season. He opened the season with a three-goal game against Rosemont College (Sept. 1).
Ryan was a NJAC First Team player during all four of his Rutgers-Camden seasons. He was named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2015, was the NJAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year in 2013 and captured the NJAC Rookie of the Year in 2012.
Ryan also was a NSCAA Division III All-South Atlantic Region player and an All-ECAC Metro/Metro-Upstate honoree every year during his Rutgers-Camden career. In addition, he was the ECAC Metro/Upstate Rookie of the Year in 2012.
As a rookie in 2012, Ryan became the program’s only freshman to earn All-America recognition with his berth on the NSCAA All-America Third Team. During his sophomore season in 2013, when he was recognized as an All-America First Team player by both the NSCAA and D3soccer.com, he became the only two-time First Team All-American in program history.
Ryan also was named the DoubleG Sports Collegiate Male Athlete of the Year in 2013.
Ryan earned five NJAC Offensive Player of the Week awards throughout his career, including one on Sept. 28 of his senior season. He also was a two-time NJAC Rookie of the Week in 2012. He was an all-tournament team member at Rutgers-Camden’s Cialella Soccer Classic every year of his career, including the Offensive MVP of the event in both 2013 and 2014.
Ryan was named Rutgers-Camden’s Athlete of the Year during the 2013-14 scholastic year.
