Dan McGettigan joined the Rutgers University-Camden women’s basketball coaching staff for the 2021-22 season, giving the Scarlet Raptors an experienced coach with years of experience on the high school level.
McGettigan coached the Winslow High School girls basketball team from 2014-2019, inheriting a program that had not won a conference championship since the 1970’s. He led the team to a second-place finish in the Olympic Conference National Division in his first season and went on to win three consecutive conference championships. In 2019, the team was moved up to the Olympic American Division, where it finished second. His teams reached the sectional tournament semifinals in four of the five seasons, losing to the eventual state champion three times. He posted a 90-39 record at Winslow.
Prior to his stint at Winslow, McGettigan led St. Joseph High School (Hammonton) to a 118-41 record from 2008-2014. St. Joseph earned a conference co-championship in his first season – only the second conference title in its program history – and then won the conference title outright in his second season. After graduating the nucleus of that championship team, St. Joseph finished second in its remaining seasons and advanced to the state quarterfinals and more in five out of six years.
McGettigan started his scholastic coaching career in November, 1996, with the Highland High School girls basketball program. From 1996-2008 he compiled a stellar 178-115 record, including four consecutive conference championships and the only sectional crown for girls basketball in the history of the Black Horse Pike district. In 2004, Highland was ranked #1 in South Jersey, #2 in the state, #5 in the East and #22 in the country according to the USA Today Super Top 25 poll.
A retired teacher and former scholastic coach, McGettigan was a four-sport athlete at Maple Shade High School, earning two varsity letters in basketball and one apiece in cross country, track and baseball over a two-year span. He competed in the 100- and 220-yard dash and long jump, played center field in baseball and was a guard/forward in basketball, where he served as the team captain in his senior season.
A resident of Blackwood, McGettigan attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He obtained his BS in Health and Physical Education in 1981, while minoring in Special Education.
