One of the all-time great players at Rutgers University-Camden, Michelle Obasi returns to her alma mater to join the women’s basketball coaching staff for the 2025-26 season.
A four-year letterwinner with the Scarlet Raptors (2014-15 through 2017-2018), Obasi served as a team captain for three seasons on her way to ranking among the program’s all-time leaders in numerous categories. She played in 103 games at Rutgers-Camden (tied for second on the career chart), starting 101. She scored 1,193 points (11th) for an 11.6 scoring average, grabbed 801 rebounds (6th), for a 7.8 average and added 106 blocked shots (8th) and 153 steals (10th). Her 504 career field goals and .410 field goal percentage both place seventh on the program’s career list.
A two-time New Jersey Athletic Conference Second Team selection, Obasi was the Scarlet Raptors’ team MVP as a junior. She was a two-time NJAC Player of the Week (Nov. 28, 2016, and Nov. 23, 2015) and a NJAC Rookie of the Week on Dec. 1, 2014. During her senior year she was named to the Jim Crawley All-Tournament Team (Nov. 17-18, 2017) and she captured five honors over her career as Rutgers-Camden’s Raptor of the Week.
In the classroom, Obasi was a three-time NJAC Academic Honorable Mention, a member of the ECAC Spring 2018 Academic Honor Roll and a six-time member of the Rutgers-Camden Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. She was named Rutgers-Camden’s representative as the NJAIAW Woman of the Year for the 2017-18 school year.
During her scholastic career at Camden Catholic High School, Obasi earned All-Conference Second Team honors as a junior and captured All-Conference First Team recognition as a senior, when she served as the team captain. She was an Al Carino All-Star Game selection and was a member of the National Honor Society.
A 2018 graduate of Rutgers University–Camden, she earned her B.S. in Biology with a minor in Africana Studies before completing her Master of Public Health at Drexel University in 2022 where her MPH concentration was in Community Health and Prevention and Maternal & Child Health.
Currently, Michelle serves as a Research Associate at the University of Delaware, where she supports studies focused on perinatal and maternal health, parental behavioral health, and autism.
