Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – Although the schedule maker wasn't kind to the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team this week, the Scarlet Raptors did manage to accomplish something here Saturday that few teams have done this season.
Trailing by four goals, Rutgers-Camden senior
Laura Rathof (National Park, NJ/Gateway Regional) managed to poke in a goal with 1:17 remaining in the game to break the shutout as the Scarlet Raptors lost to national powerhouse Montclair State University, 4-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game. It was only the fourth goal allowed by the Red Hawks all season long, and only the second since an opening-day 2-1 loss to Johns Hopkins University, which is currently ranked No. 7 in both the NSCAA and the
D3soccer.com Top 25 polls.
Montclair State, which is No. 14 in the NSCAA and No. 12 in the
D3soccer.com polls, improves to 13-1-1 overall, by hiking its unbeaten string to 14 games (13-0-1). Rutgers-Camden falls to 5-9-1 and 2-5 after its second loss to a Top 20 team in three days: the Raptors fell 4-0 at No. 19/13 TCNJ on Thursday.
Montclair State held a 25-7 advantage in shots, forcing Scarlet Raptor sophomore goalie
Angela Martorano (Gloucester Township, NJ/Triton Regional) to record a career-high 12 saves. The 12 saves tied her for 12th on the program's single-game charts with eight other players. Her previous high was nine against Oswego State on Aug. 31 and she added eight against TCNJ Thursday.
Montclair State, which entered the game out-scoring opponents, 44-3, and out-shooting them, 309-66, was held off the board for nearly half of the opening half before junior forward
Martina Landeka (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) found the bottom right corner of the net at 20:07, assisted by senior back
Catherine Zysk (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ/Northern Highlands). Less than three minutes later, the Red Hawks added another goal on an unassisted tally by senior forward
Kaila Fasano (Westwood, NJ/Westwood). It was her team-leading 10th goal of the season.
Laura Rathof (5) scores the Scarlet Raptors' lone goal Montclair State added a pair of within a span of 1:12 early in the second half. At 45:54, senior forward
Francesca Gibson (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May Regional) finished off a corner kick by sophomore midfielder
Erin Sullivan (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) that snuck through the Raptor defense at the near post. At 47:06, junior forward
Stefanie Gomes (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) made it a 4-0 game with an unassisted tally.
Rutgers-Camden finally broke the scoring ice with 1:17 remaining, beginning when senior back
Rachel Sindoni (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) played a restart into the box. It touched off senior midfielder
Rebecca Gougher (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) in her attempt to score, and went to Rathof near the goal line, who finished off her second goal of the season. Prior to that goal, the Red Hawks had rolled off 12 shutouts, and only allowed one goal, in their last 13 games.
Montclair State increased its all-time lead in its Rutgers-Camden series to 16-0-1, including 13 straight wins. Rathof's goal was the first for the Raptors against the Red Hawks since a 3-1 loss at Montclair State Oct. 3, 2009.
Both teams return to action Wednesday. The Red Hawks host Ramapo College in a 3 p.m. NJAC contest. The Scarlet Raptors play a 4 p.m. non-conference game at the College of Staten Island.
