Box Score
CLERMONT, Fla. – Sophomore pitcher
Brittany Scott (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) fired her second impressive game and clubbed her second three-run home run of the season as the Rutgers University-Camden softball team opened its trip to the Dot Richardson Spring Games with a 5-1 nine-inning victory over No. 20-ranked Babson College Saturday morning.
The Scarlet Raptors improve to 3-0, while the Beavers fall to 1-1.
Scott and Babson senior
Kathleen Conway (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) were locked in a scoreless duel through seven innings before both teams plated runs, aided by the international tie-breaker rule, in the eighth inning. Babson collected only three singles off Scott over the first seven innings, while Rutgers-Camden had only two singles and a double off Conway through seven innings.
In the top of the eighth, the Raptors' sophomore second baseman
Cait Elztholtz (Bellmawr, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) was placed on second base to begin the inning, under tie-breaker rules. Scott sacrificed her to third and she scored on a single to right by freshman first baseman
Jessea Macaluso (Charlotte, NC/Allentown).
Babson bounced back in similar fashion in the bottom of the eighth after junior shortstop
Rachael Bullard (Worcester, MA/Doherty) started the inning at second base. A sacrifice moved her to third base and she scored on a two-out passed ball.
The Scarlet Raptors broke the game open in the ninth with four unearned runs after junior shortstop
Krystine Rice (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) was placed at second base. Junior designated player
Devon Welsh (Maple Shade, NJ/Audubon) dropped down a sacrifice bunt and then reached on an error. One out later, senior catcher
Tabby Dick (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester City) singled home the go-ahead run and with two outs, Scott drilled a three-run home run to center field.
Scott (2-0) shut out the Beavers in the bottom of the ninth and finished with a four-hitter, walking two and striking out seven. The only run she allowed was unearned due to the international tie-breaker placing a runner at second base.
Conway (0-1) allowed seven hits and four walks, while striking out 15. All five runs she allowed were unearned.
Scott also was the lone batter in the game with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with one run and three RBIs.
Raptor sophomore leftfielder
Lexy Fair (Deptford, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) went 1-for-2 with two walks and three stolen bases.
The Scarlet Raptors face Wittenberg University later today in a 3 p.m. game at the Dot Richardson Spring Games.
