Carter, Sigismondi power Rutgers-Camden offense

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Rutgers University-Camden baseball team has found its offensive groove and the Scarlet Raptors' surge continued here Thursday at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

Rutgers-Camden pounded out 15 hits in a 12-6 victory over Washington & Jefferson College of Washington, Pennsylvania. It was the third straight game – all wins – in which the Scarlet Raptors posted double digits in runs.

Rutgers-Camden improves to 5-3 and evens its record at 3-3 down in Florida during spring break.

Washington & Jefferson, which has been ranked as high as No. 21 in the D3baseball.com poll this season, falls to 6-5 with its third straight loss. In this week's national polls, the Presidents received votes in both the D3baseball.com (28 votes) and the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Division III rankings (8 votes).

The Presidents are the second team the Scarlet Raptors have played on this trip that has been mentioned in the national polls. Rutgers-Camden lost to Anderson (Indiana) College, 7-2, on Monday. The Ravens received votes to both Top 25 polls this week.

Freshman leftfielder Doug Carter (Union, NJ/Union) paced the Raptors' offense, going 4-for-5 with four runs, three RBIs and two stolen bases. He also was hit by a pitch.

Sophomore shortstop Joe Sigismondi (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) went 3-for-3 with one run, while junior designated hitter Brandon Porter (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Junior centerfielder Bobby Romano (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) added a 2-for-5 game with two RBIs, while senior rightfielder Adrian Gonzalez (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) was 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

The Scarlet Raptors built a 6-0 lead through seven innings, collecting two runs apiece in the second, fifth and seventh, before both teams exploded in the eighth inning. Rutgers-Camden notched five runs in the top of the eighth before Washington & Jefferson scored all six of its runs in the bottom of the frame. Gonzalez singled home two of the runs in the Raptors' eighth.

Junior southpaw Ron Reagan (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) picked up the victory with 7-1/3 strong innings, hurling shutout ball into the eighth inning before Washington & Jefferson scored all of its runs. Reagan allowed 10 hits and five runs – one earned – while walking two and striking out five. He raised his record to 2-1.

Freshman Bobby Missovoulos (Erial, NJ/Timber Creek) worked the final 1-2/3 innings in his collegiate debut, allowing five hits and one unearned run. He walked one and struck out one.

The Scarlet Raptors return to action Friday in Lakeland, facing Bowdoin College (Brunswick, Maine) in a 10 a.m. doubleheader.
