LAKELAND, Fla. – The Rutgers University-Camden and Bowdoin College baseball teams played a doubleheader of give and take here Friday at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, but in the end, it was the Polar Bears who ended up taking home more.
Bowdoin outlasted Rutgers-Camden, 7-5, in an eight-inning first game before the two teams played to a 6-6 tie in the nightcap. The second game was called after eight innings as Bowdoin had to catch a flight home from its spring break trip.
The games leave Rutgers-Camden with a 5-4-1 record overall, including a 3-4-1 mark on its spring trip to Florida.
Bowdoin College brings an 8-3-1 record back to its campus in Brunswick, Maine.
The Scarlet Raptors conclude their spring trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Saturday. They face Trinity (Conn.) College in a 10 a.m. doubleheader.
Bowdoin 7, Rutgers-Camden 5 (8 innings)
In the opening game, Bowdoin built a 4-0 lead and saw the Raptors tie the game with a four-run fifth inning before the Polar Bears regained the lead in the sixth. The Scarlet Raptors tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single by freshman second baseman
Joe Brooks (Blackwood, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) before Bowdoin scored twice in the top of the eighth to win the game. The Polar Bears used two doubles and three errors in their decisive frame.
After falling into a 4-0 hole against Bowdoin junior pitcher
Erik Jacobsen (Milton, MA/Milton Academy), the Scarlet Raptors rallied to tie the game in the fifth. Junior first baseman
Connor Hall (Delran, NJ/Delran) opened the inning with a single and junior centerfielder
Bobby Romano (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) drew a one-out walk. With two outs, the Raptors produced consecutive RBI singles by freshman catcher
John Theckston (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), sophomore third baseman
Brett Tenuto (Audubon, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Brooks and senior rightfielder
Adrian Gonzalez (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken).
After Bowdoin bounced back with a run in the sixth, Brooks singled home the tying run in the seventh to force extra innings.
Brooks and Gonzalez each collected two hits for the Scarlet Raptors. Sophomore designated hitter
Chad Martin (Rowley, MA/The Governor's Academy) went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs for the Polar Bears.
Rutgers-Camden 6, Bowdoin 6 (8 innings)
In a game both teams had a legitimate chance to win, neither one did as Bowdoin's pre-determined depart time halted the contest after eight innings.
The Polar Bears took a 3-2 lead into the seventh before Rutgers-Camden exploded for four runs, including a two-run double by Hall, to grab a 6-3 advantage. Bowdoin, however, scored three to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, with junior shortstop
Aaron Rosen (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) singling home two of them.
Both teams collected 11 hits in the game. Romano went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI for the Scarlet Raptors. Brooks was 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, Hall had a double and finished with three RBIs and sophomore shortstop
Joe Sigismondi (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) went 2-for-2 with one RBI.
Martin went 3-for-5 with a run in the nightcap for the Polar Bears as he finished the doubleheader 6-for-9.
