Rachel Rivell (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Regional) scored the lone goal of the game with 7:25 remaining to lift the William Paterson University women's soccer team over Rutgers University-Camden, 1-0, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams here Saturday night.
William Paterson evens its record at 2-2-3 overall and stands at 1-0 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 2-5-1 and 0-1.
Although the Pioneers had several opportunities, including a shot off the post midway through the second half by sophomore midfielder
Sidney Gabrich (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional), they didn't crack the Scarlet Raptors' defense until late in the game. Gabrich assisted on Rivell's third goal of the season.
Rutgers-Camden, which had seven shots in the game, took four of them after that goal in an attempt to tie the game. Shots by senior midfielders

Rebecca Gougher (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) were saved by Paterson freshman keeper
Angela Sandelli (Landing, NJ/Roxbury). They were the only two saves of the game for Sandelli.
The Raptors' late-game push to tie the score also included a header by senior forward
Bec Garretson (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) and a shot by sophomore midfielder/forward
Catherine Fiore (Oaklyn, NJ/Paul VI), both going high.
The Pioneers held an 8-2 advantage in shots in the opening half, while both teams had two corner kicks. For the game, Paterson held a 12-7 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Rutgers-Camden freshman goalie
Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) made five saves in the contest, while Sandelli had two.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. non-conference game at Cabrini College.
