Box Score NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 14, 2016) – The Albertus Magnus College softball team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun Rutgers University-Camden, 3-2, as the Scarlet Raptors opened their spring trip to the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic here Monday morning.
The Scarlet Raptors (1-4) entered the bottom of the seventh leading, 2-0, behind two-hit shutout pitching from senior
Brittany Scott (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional), and retired the Falcons' first batter on a comebacker to the pitcher. Senior
Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, CT/Foran) followed with a double to left field and advanced when sophomore
Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, NY/West Islip) reached on an infield error. Sophomore pinch-hitter
Kirsten McGinty (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) drew a walk to load the bases.
The Falcons, from New Haven, Connecticut, broke Scott's shutout bid when sophomore
Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck) walked to force home a run. Junior
Megan Kelly (Bronx, NY/Preston) looped a game-tying single over the drawn-in Raptor infield on the right side and sophomore
Melissa Castillo (Taftville, CT/Norwich Free Academy) ended the game with a line single to right.
The late rally made a winner out of sophomore pitcher
Megan Ferraro (Branford, CT/Branford), who allowed five hits and only one earned run. Ferraro (1-0) walked one and struck out four in winning the Falcons' first game of the year.
Scott also allowed five hits, with three coming in the last inning. She walked five and struck out six.
Rutgers-Camden scored single runs in the third and fourth innings. In the third, freshman designated player
Kacie Pisani (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) opened the frame by reaching second base on an error. She scored on a line single up the middle by freshman first baseman
Charlee Greco (Shamong, NJ/Seneca). In the fourth, sophomore second baseman
Taylor Nichols (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) opened with a bunt single and stole second. She scored on a double by Scott to right-center. The Raptors proceeded to load the bases with one out, but Ferraro wriggled out of the jam on a fielder's choice at home and a fly out.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Tuesday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Scarlet Raptors face Sarah Lawrence College (Bronxville, New York) at 9:30 a.m. and play Southern Vermont College (Bennington, Vermont) at 11:30 a.m.
