EWING, N.J. (April 21, 2016) – One swing of the bat made all the difference in the world during The New Jersey Athletic Conference baseball game between Rutgers University-Camden and nationally-ranked The College of New Jersey here Thursday.

Senior designated hitter Garen Turner (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley) capped the Lions' five-run third inning with a grand slam to left field, and TCNJ built a six-run lead before hanging on to post a 6-4 victory over Rutgers-Camden.

TCNJ, which is ranked No. 12 in the ABCA poll and No. 15 in the D3baseball.com poll, improves to 25-4 with its 11th consecutive win. The Lions have a 9-2 record to lead the NJAC.

Rutgers-Camden, which had won seven out of its last eight games before Thursday, fell to 18-10 overall and 5-6 in the conference.

The Lions broke open a scoreless game in the third after a walk was sandwiched between a pair of outs to open the frame. A fielder's choice, which didn't result in an out, and another walk loaded the bases before senior rightfielder Patrick Roberts (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) singled home one run. Turner followed with his grand slam, his second home run of the season.

TCNJ tacked on another run in the fifth after Roberts reached on a one-out error and Turner singled.. A sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Zachary Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) plated the run.

Rutgers-Camden got back into the game with a four-run seventh inning, sparked by leadoff walks to freshman third baseman Ray Taylor (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) and junior centerfielder Cory Kreamer (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge). One out later, junior leftfielder Joe Brooks (Blackwood, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) singled home Taylor. Freshman shortstop Chris Jones (Sewell, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) followed with another RBI single, plating Kreamer. Senior second baseman Brett Tenuto (Audubon, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) made it a 6-4 game with a two-run double down the right field line before TCNJ used its third pitcher of the inning, freshman Michael Fischer (Trenton, NJ/Robbinsville), to wriggle out of the jam.

Fischer went on to close out the game, working 2.2 scoreless innings and allowing only a one-out ninth-inning single to Brooks. He struck out three to earn his first collegiate save.

Lions sophomore starter Brandon Zachary (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) worked six-plus innings, walking the first two batters in the seventh before being relieved. Zachary allowed two hits, two earned runs and six walks. He struck out three while raising his record to 6-0.

Rutgers-Camden senior starter Billy Jackson (Estell Manor, NJ/Buena Regional) took the loss, dropping his record to 5-3. He worked seven innings, allowing seven hits, six runs (five earned) and three walks. He struck out two.

Turner went 3-for-4 with one run and four RBIs to pace the Lions' seven-hit attack. Rutgers-Camden collected six hits, half of them by Brooks, who was 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI.

The Scarlet Raptors and the Lions complete their home-and-home series at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Camden.
