Rutgers-Camden captured its fourth consecutive North Eastern Athletic Conference golf title Sunday, carding a final-round 301 to capture the two-day NEAC Championships by 18 strokes over host SUNY-Cobleskill. Rutgers-Camden shot a 310-301—611 on the Par 70, 6,163-yard Cobleskill Golf & Country Club course.
With their fourth consecutive NEAC title, the Scarlet Raptors qualify for the NCAA Division III Golf Championship, which will be held May 10-13 at the Midvale Country Club and Mendon Golf Club in Rochester, New York.
Rutgers-Camden saw all five of its players finish among the top eight golfers in the field of 41 athletes as they placed their entire lineup on the NEAC First and Second Teams. In addition, Raptor Head Coach
Bob Cardea was named the NEAC Coach of the Year for a fifth time. He also won the honor in 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2015.
Rutgers-Camden has now won six of the eight NEAC championships that have been played since it joined the conference and played in the NEAC tournament for the first time in 2009. The Raptors captured the crown in 2009, 2010 and the last four seasons, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. They were the conference runner-up in 2011 and 2012.
Rutgers-Camden was led by junior
Kevin Sarlo (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township), who finished second overall, one stroke back of overall medalist Ian Wilson of SUNY-Cobleskill. Sarlo shot a two-day 73-75—148. Junior
Ryan Dick (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) finished fourth overall (80-74—154), while junior
Zach Arsenault (Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee) and junior
Pete DeStefano (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) tied for fifth place with two-day totals of 155. Arsenault shot 81-74, while DeStefano shot 77-78.
Freshman
Cory Meyer (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown) finished fifth on the Raptor team but eighth overall with a two-day 80-79—159.
Sarlo, Dick and Arsenault earned NEAC First Team honors, while DeStefano and Meyer were named to the conference's Second Team.
In addition to punching their ticket to the NCAA Division III Golf Championships, the Raptors also continued their season-long winning streak and a pair of program records. Rutgers-Camden has won all five of its invitationals this semester, a single-semester record, and has won six straight invitationals dating back to last semester, a program record for a scholastic year.
