Scott's second straight no-hitter highlights twinbill split

Brittany Scott...Second straight start with a no-hitter
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GALLOWAY, N.J. (April 6, 2016) – Move over, Johnny Vander Meer and make room for Rutgers University-Camden senior pitcher Brittany Scott (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional).

Scott hurled a no-hitter for the second straight start as the Scarlet Raptors defeated Stockton University, 4-0, in the opening game of their New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader here Wednesday. Scott's double no-hitter duplicates a feat that only one pitcher ever accomplished in Major League Baseball – the Cincinnati Reds' Vander Meer in 1938.

After the Scarlet Raptors won the opener, the Ospreys turned the table in the nightcap to post a 7-0 victory. The split leaves Rutgers-Camden at 11-9 overall and 2-2 in the NJAC. Stockton is 15-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Rutgers-Camden is scheduled to play a non-conference home doubleheader Thursday at 3 p.m. against John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The Raptors will play a 1 p.m. NJAC doubleheader at Kean University Saturday.

Katie Larson...2-for-4 with two walks and a two-run home run
in doubleheader split
Rutgers-Camden 4, Stockton 0

Scott hurled her second straight no-hitter, allowing only one walk and one hit batsman in her gem, which came on the heels of a 5-0 no-hitter against Rutgers-Newark in the opening game of a doubleheader last Saturday. The only Stockton runners came on a leadoff walk in the third inning and a leadoff hit batsman in the fourth. With a caught stealing added to the mix, Scott faced only one batter over the minimum. She set down the last 12 Stockton batters in order.

Scott, who struck out six Ospreys, has also thrown a perfect game this season on March 15 against Southern Vermont College, on addition to her back-to-back no-hitters. She now owns four no-hitters in her Scarlet Raptor career, with the one against Stockton being the 25th overall no-hitter by a Rutgers-Camden pitcher in program history.

The Scarlet Raptors scored two gift runs in the first inning when the first three batters – sophomore second baseman Taylor Nichols (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights), junior shortstop Jalene Garcia (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and Scott all reached on errors by Stockton's third baseman. Two wild pitches later, the Raptors had a pair of unearned runs.

Rutgers-Camden tacked on two more runs in the third when Scott singled and senior third baseman Katie Larson (Delran, NJ/Delran) drilled a two-run home run to right field, her second round-tripper of the season.

Scott raised her record to 8-5. The tough-luck losing pitcher was Osprey senior Samantha Shockey (Deptford, NJ/Deptford), who allowed only three hits – singles by Scott and Garcia and the home run by Larson. Shockey (5-4), who pitched for Rutgers-Camden during her freshman season in 2013, walked two, struck out four and allowed only two earned runs out of the four.

Abby Merryman...2-for-3 in nightcap
The second game was another matchup between Scott and Shockey, but this time the Stockton ace came out on top.

After 3-1/2 scoreless innings, Stockton broke through in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases on a pair of singles and a throwing error on a fielder's choice. Sophomore catcher Alexa Massa (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) singled home a run and a wild pitch scored Shockey, who had reached on a single. After an infield single re-loaded the bases, another fielder's choice and infield throwing error scored two more runs. Two more runs came home on a single by sophomore leftfielder Chelsea Thomas (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights), making it a 6-0 game before the Raptors escaped the inning. Only one of the runs was earned.

Stockton added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI double by senior second baseman Gianna Cuffari (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove).

Scott allowed seven hits and six runs – five unearned – in four innings, while walking one and striking out five. Junior Abby Merryman (Washington Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) hurled the last two innings after starting at first base. She allowed four hits and one earned run, while fanning one.

Shockey hurled a five-hit shutout, walking two and striking out two. Shockey also went 2-for-4 at the plate, adding one run scored.

Merryman went 2-for-3 at the plate as the only Scarlet Raptor with multiple hits.
