Box Score

CAMDEN, NJ. (April 8, 2016) – The Rowan University baseball team scored seven runs with two outs in an inning, including six on two-out singles, and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 8-2, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game Friday on a cold, windy day at Campbell's Field.

The victory was the seventh straight for the Profs, who improve to 13-9 overall and 3-0 in the NJAC. For Rutgers-Camden, which is ranked No. 27 in the ABCA Division III Coaches' Poll and No. 25 in the D3baseball.com Top 25, the loss was the fifth in its last six games, dropping the Scarlet Raptors' record to 11-7 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

The game came one day after the first contest in a home-and-home NJAC series was rained out at Rowan. That game has been rescheduled for Monday at 3:30 p.m. in Glassboro.

With the score ties at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning, the Profs scored the decisive run on a two-out RBI single by junior rightfielder Kyle Golla (Palm Coast, FL/Allentown, NJ). They added another run when senior catcher Greg Myers (Westmont, NJ/Haddon Township) stole home as Golla got himself caught in a rundown before escaping on an error.

The Profs added a two-out RBI in the fifth on a single by junior designated hitter Nick Gallo (Sewell, NJ/Paul VI) and added an RBI single in the sixth from junior third baseman Matt Jolly (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape). They tacked on a pair of two-out runs in the seventh on an RBI single from senior centerfielder Bret Phillips (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) and a bases-loaded walk to Jolly.

Rowan scored a pair of runs in the opening frame on three hits, including a two-run, two-out single by senior second baseman Evan Hughes (Wilmington, DE/Alexis I. DuPont).

Rutgers-Camden tied the game in the third inning following a leadoff single by junior centerfielder Cory Kreamer (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge), a walk to freshman third baseman Ray Taylor (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) and a sacrifice by senior second baseman Brett Tenuto (Audubon, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). The Raptors got on the scoreboard when junior rightfielder Zach Ellin (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) picked up an RBI while reaching on an infield error. They tied the game on an RBI ground out by junior leftfielder Joe Brooks (Blackwood, NJ/Gloucester Catholic).

Rowan collected 18 hits off of six Rutgers-Camden pitchers, including three apiece by Phillips, Hughes and Myers. That was more than enough offense for freshman righty Eric Shugars (Shamong, NJ/Seneca), who worked six innings, allowing two hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks. Shugars (4-0) struck out two.

Senior Billy Jackson (Estell Manor, NJ/Buena Regional) took the loss to drop to 4-2 on the season. Jackson worked 4.2 innings, allowing 11 hits, five runs (four earned) and three walks. He struck out two.

Rutgers-Camden collected seven hits on the day, five of them coming after Shugars left the game. Tenuto and Kreamer both had two hits for the Scarlet Raptors. Tenuto also walked, was hit by a pitch and added a sacrifice.

Both teams have already moved their scheduled Saturday NJAC doubleheaders to Sunday due to the forecast. The Scarlet Raptors will play at Rutgers University-Newark, while the Profs will host New Jersey City University.
