CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (Sept. 2, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team mounted a furious comeback in its opening match of the season, but the Scarlet Raptors fell just short of overtaking Baruch College.
Rutgers-Camden lost to Baruch, 14-25, 20-25, 25-14, 25-15, 14-16, in its opening match and then was swept by host DeSales University, 25-9, 25-12, 25-8 in Friday's action at the DeSales University Invitational.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Saturday at the DeSales University Invitational. They will play Gwynedd Mercy University at 10 a.m. and Washington College (Maryland) at 2 p.m.
Baruch College 3, Rutgers-Camden 2
After losing the first two sets, the Raptors roared back with two wins before battling into a 14-11 lead in the final set. Baruch, however, scored the last five points to pull out the match.
Freshman outside hitter
Jassmine Watson (Penns Grove, NJ/Clearview Regional) collected 11 kills and his .346, while freshman outside hitter
Jamie Mulligan (New Gretna, NJ/Pinelands Regional) added nine kills. Senior C

Myiah Gatling (Woolwich Township, NJ/Kingsway Regional) both added seven kills. Freshman setter

Kim Bryfogle (Collingswood, NJ/Paul VI) had 24 and 13 assists, respectively.
The Raptors also received four assisted blocks apiece from freshman
Morgan Mulligan (New Gretna, NJ/Pinelands Regional) and Gatling, while junior
Erin Thompson (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) had a match-high 23 digs to pass the 600-career plateau and reach 620. Another Raptor letterwinner, senior
Melanie Kaiser (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) had a match-high three aces.
DeSales 3, Rutgers-Camden 0
In the DeSales match, freshman
Jordan Erskine (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) led the team with four kills, while Marcano and Bryfogle netted six and five assists, apiece.
Thompson and freshman
Natalie DiGiacomo (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had seven digs apiece, while freshman
Meghan Gallagher (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) added five. Bryfogle and
Jamie Mulligan both added four digs.
