AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 14, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Camden baseball team gave Endicott College a big head start with five errors over the first three innings and the Gulls went on to post a 14-7 victory at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational here Tuesday.
 
The Scarlet Raptors (3-4) fell into a quick hole against the Beverly, Massachusetts-based team. The Gulls (3-1), who received 12 votes in this week's D3baseball.com Top 25 poll and 11 in the ABCA Division III Top 30 poll, plated seven runs over the first three innings, five of them unearned as the result of the five Rutgers-Camden errors.
 
Endicott held a 5-0 lead before Rutgers-Camden scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a walk, a run-scoring double by senior designated hitter Brandon Cornelius (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) and a run-scoring error. The Gulls, however, added two more runs in the third, aided by three Raptor errors, to regain their five-run margin at 7-2.
 
The Raptors cut their deficit to 7-4 with a two-run fourth inning, which included a walk and three singles, including a two-run hit by sophomore second baseman Chris Jones (Washington Township, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep).
 
After the Gulls scored a run in the top of the fifth, the Scarlet Raptors loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth and came away with one run on a RBI walk to senior leftfielder Doug Carter Jr. (Union, NJ/Union). Endicott, however, countered with five hits and four runs in the top of the seventh to open up a 12-5 lead. Three players had RBI singles in the frame and the fourth run scored on a double play.
 
The Gulls capped their big night with a two-run home run in the eighth inning by senior shortstop Mike Kochiss (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe). Kochiss had a huge day for Endicott, leading an 18-hit Gulls attack by going 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBIs. Among his four hits were two doubles and the home run.
 
Rutgers-Camden received two hits apiece from sophomore centerfielder Peter Farlow (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Jones, Cornelius and freshman catcher Tyler Travis (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional). For Travis, the game marked his first collegiate start and produced his first two collegiate hits – a pair of singles to right field in the second and fourth innings. He also drew a ninth-inning walk and went 2-for-4 overall.
 
Jones led the team with two RBIs.
 
Rutgers-Camden will play Eastern Connecticut State University Wednesday at 3:15 at the RussMatt Invitational. The Warriors received eight votes in this week's D3baseball.com Top 25 poll and one in the ABCA poll.
