EWING, N.J. (April 10, 2017) – The College of New Jersey baseball team received a combined three-hitter from a trio of pitchers and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 4-2, here Monday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference makeup game. The game was rained out on its originally-scheduled day last Thursday.
 
TCNJ, ranked No. 17 in the D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll and No. 19 in the ABCA Coaches' Poll, improves to 15-6 overall and 5-1 in the NJAC with its second win over Rutgers-Camden in four days. The Lions beat the Scarlet Raptors in Camden, 6-4, on Friday.
 
Rutgers-Camden, meanwhile, falls to 10-12 overall and 1-5 in the NJAC with its fifth straight conference defeat.
 
After limiting the Raptors to four hits in their win on Friday, the Lions used the combined three-hit pitching of sophomore starter Dylan Crowley (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge), sophomore Zac deRocco (Red Bank, NJ/Middletown South) and junior Matt Curry (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) on Monday. Crowley, who got the win in relief on Friday, started and hurled three no-hit innings, with the only baserunner against him reaching on an error. He struck out three. The win in relief went to deRocco (1-1), who worked four innings of two-hit ball, allowing only two unearned runs and one walk, while striking out one. Curry notched his third save with two shutout innings, allowing only one hit while fanning two.
 
With the game tied at 2-2, the Lions pushed across the eventual winning run in the sixth inning following a leadoff double by senior catcher CJ Gearhart (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville). He was sacrificed to third and scored on a wild pitch. The Lions added an insurance run with an unearned tally in the eighth inning.
 
The tough-luck losing pitcher was Raptor freshman Matthew Stoots (Browns Mills, NJ/Pemberton), making his second collegiate start on the mound. Stoots (0-2), who has earned a pair of NJAC Rookie of the Week honors for his play at third base, worked six innings, allowing six hits, two walks and three earned runs. He struck out five.
 
TCNJ collected three hits and two runs in the first inning, with junior designated hitter Austin Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) stroking a RBI double and scoring on a Gearhart single.
 
Rutgers-Camden countered with two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. With two outs, sophomore second baseman Chris Jones (Washington Township, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) walked. He advanced to second when senior rightfielder Brandon Cornelius (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) reached on an infield error. Senior leftfielder Doug Carter Jr (Union, NJ/Union) followed with a two-run double down the left field line.
 
Gearhart went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI for the Lions, who had only seven hits off Stoots and junior reliever Carter Fichter (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial). He was the lone player with multiple hits in the game.
 
Carter and Jones hit doubles for the Scarlet Raptors. Senior catcher Jon Theckston (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) had a sixth-inning single for the Raptors' only other hit. Carter had both RBIs, while Jones and Cornelius scored the two Raptor runs.
 
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game at DeSales University.
