Raptors top NJCU for first NJAC victory

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Oct. 23, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team produced the second-highest four-set match totals in program history for both kills and assists, while hitting .339 as a team, as it defeated New Jersey City University, 3-1, here Tuesday night.

The Scarlet Raptors, who won by scores of 25-19, 22-25, 25-12 and 25-11, earned their first New Jersey Athletic Conference win of the year, raising their NJAC mark to 1-7. They are 10-16 overall, snapping a four-match losing streak.

NJCU falls to 0-8 in the conference and 10-17 overall with its second straight defeat.

Rutgers-Camden still trails its all-time series with NJCU, 10-15, but has won its last 10 matches against the Gothic Knights after losing the first 15 head-to-head matchups. The last NJCU win came by a 3-0 margin on Oct. 21, 2008 in Jersey City.

In Tuesday's match, the Scarlet Raptors collected 60 kills, second only in program history to the 67 they had against Rowan in a four-set match on Oct. 3, 2006. They also notched 56 assists, the second-highest four-set total behind another 67 from that 2006 Rowan match.

Leading the way in kills were junior Jamie Mulligan and freshman Delaney Kolb, who notched 12 apiece while hitting .417 and .391, respectively. Junior Jordan Erskine had 10 kills and hit .500, junior Morgan Mulligan notched nine kills and a team-high four aces, and the duo of senior Myiah Gatling and freshman Ava D'Ambrosio both added seven kills. A pair of freshmen, Kayla Benesz and Brinn Hassan, both had seven digs, while leading the way with 27 and 22 assists, respectively.

Sophomore Ashley Newman collected a team-high 24 digs and freshman Haley Novak notched three service aces.

Rutgers-Camden closes its season Saturday with a tri-match at Wilkes University. The Scarlet Raptors play Marywood University at 12 p.m. and face Wilkes at 2 p.m.
