UNION, N.J. (April 28, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Camden softball team played four strong games at Kean University over a three-day span to end its season.
Unfortunately for the Scarlet Raptors, they lost all four games against a pair of good New Jersey Athletic Conference opponents. Rutgers-Camden closed its season here Saturday as it dropped a pair of tight games against powerful Kean University, 3-1 and 5-1.
It was the Scarlet Raptors' second trip to Kean in three days. On Thursday, they played a makeup doubleheader against Ramapo College at Kean, due to the Roadrunners' unplayable field. Ramapo swept Rutgers-Camden in a pair of one-run games that day, 1-0 and 2-1 in eight innings.
Rutgers-Camden closes its season at 10-21 overall and 3-15 in the NJAC. Kean, which will head into the conference playoffs, improved to 26-10 overall and 11-7 in NJAC play.
Kean 3, Rutgers-Camden 1
The first game featured a pitchers' duel between Scarlet Raptor junior
Kendra Pfister (Dacula, GA/Dacula) and Kean junior Jacqueline Riley. Pfister (6-11) hurled another strong game, allowing only six hits and three runs (two earned), while walking four. Riley, however, raised her record to 10-5 with a four-hitter, allowing only one earned run, while striking out five.
A pair of walks and a RBI single by freshman right fielder Katie Debbie gave the Cougars a run in the first inning. They added a run in the fourth on a walk and a RBI single by junior first baseman Kaitlin Stahlbrand and tacked on an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth.
Rutgers-Camden, meanwhile, had only one hit over the first four innings – a leadoff single in the third inning by junior designated player
Allie Jenkins (Delanco, NJ/Riverside). Jenkins,

Rutgers-Camden scored its lone run in the top of the sixth when junior left fielder
Kacie Pisani (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) had a one-out single and was sacrificed to second by freshman shortstop
Nina Arroyo (Delran, NJ/Delran). She scored on a single to left by senior center fielder
Gabrielle Castellini (Millville, NJ/Wildwood Catholic). Castellini finished her outstanding four-year collegiate career – two seasons at Cumberland County College and two at Rutgers-Camden – with a combined 196 hits, missing a chance at the 200 milestone when the Raptors saw three non-conference doubleheaders cancelled due to weather issues this spring.
Kean 5, Rutgers-Camden 1
Pfister nearly pitched her second complete game of the day, working 5-2/3 innings in the nightcap while allowing eight hits, three walks and five earned runs. She struck out three while ending the season with a 6-12 record.
Stahlbrand (11-5) pitched the second game for the Cougars, allowing only four Raptor singles and one earned run. She struck out four.
Kean broke a scoreless duel with a run in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Stahlbrand. A pair of hits and a run-scoring wild pitch gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. They closed out the game with a three-run sixth, with all the runs coming on a home run by freshman second baseman Julie Raba.
Rutgers-Camden was no-hit by Stahlbrand until the sixth inning, when senior third baseman
Gabby Pfeiffer (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) had a one-out single up the middle in what turned out to be her final collegiate at bat. She ended her combined four-year career (two at Burlington County College/Rowan College at Burlington County and two with the Scarlet Raptors) with 111 hits.
The Raptors notched their lone run on three hits in the seventh inning, sparked by an infield single from Arroyo. Pfister singled through the right side and with two outs, the lone senior to play her entire four-year career with the Scarlet Raptors, catcher
Mackenzie Mason (Penns Grove, NJ/Penns Grove), had her last collegiate at bat. She made it count with a single up the middle to drive home the Raptors' lone run.
