GLASSBORO, N.J. (Sept. 1, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team spent the first half of Saturday's game launching shots at the Old Westbury goal to no avail.
The Scarlet Raptors quickly made up for their frustrations in the second half.
Sophomore
Skyler Digg broke a scoreless deadlock only 26 seconds into the second half and the Scarlet Raptors went on to blank Old Westbury, 2-0, at Rowan University's Gilmore Classic. With two wins in two days, Rutgers-Camden captured the Gilmore Classic title.
Rutgers-Camden held Old Westbury (0-2) to only three shots on the day – none on goal – as it raised its record to 2-0. Sophomore
Kieran Burns played the first 81:56 in goal and junior
Chris Lenahan finished up, with neither one needing to make a save in the combined shutout.
Mike Warren made six saves for Old Westbury as Rutgers-Camden held a 20-3 advantage in shots, including 13 in the first half. The Scarlet Raptors also held an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks, with seven coming in the opening 45 minutes.
Diggs broke the scoring ice almost as soon as the second half started, getting a feed from junior midfielder
Patrick Grudnik and hitting a one-timer across the net into the lower left corner. It was his second goal in as many days and his first game-winning tally of the season.
The Scarlet Raptors added an insurance tally at 68:54 when freshman
Aba David one-timed a shot off a loose ball in front of the net. The goal produced his first collegiate points.
Rutgers-Camden's 2-0 start is its first since 2015. The Scarlet Raptors will open their home season Wednesday with a 7 pm. game against Alvernia University.
