Raptors drop two matches at DeSales Invitational



CENTER VALLEY, Penn. (Sept. 1, 2018) – With their season-opening weekend behind them against tough competition at the DeSales University Invitational, the Rutgers University-Camden Scarlet Raptors can look forward to their volleyball home opener on Tuesday, when they host Ursinus College at 7 p.m.
 
Rutgers-Camden (1-3) lost both of its matches Saturday at DeSales, dropping its opener in five sets against Washington College of Maryland (25-22, 15-25, 25-18, 22-25, 6-15). The young Scarlet Raptors lost another close match in their second outing of the day, falling to Colby-Sawyer College, 3-1 (17-25, 23-25, 26-24, 21-25).

After splitting the first four sets in a tight match, Washington College outlasted Rutgers-Camden, 15-6, in the deciding set.
 
The Scarlet Raptors received nine kills apiece from freshman Devyn Cobb and junior Jamie Mulligan, while juniors Jordan Erskine and Morgan Mulligan, and freshman Nicole Long, all added eight kills. Freshmen Brinn Hassan and Kayla Benesz led the Raptors' assists with 20 and 14, respectively.
 
Hassan, Morgan Mulligan and freshman Savannah Hayes had 15, 14 and 10 digs, respectively, while Cobb added two assisted blocks.
 
Colby-Sawyer 3, Rutgers-Camden 1
 
The New Hampshire-based Chargers outlasted the Scarlet Raptors in the fourth set by scoring three straight points to take a 20-16 lead and hanging on for the win.
 
Jamie Mulligan and senior Myiah Gatling collected 11 kills apiece for the Scarlet Raptors, with Gatling posting a stellar .611 hitting percentage (no errors, 18 total attacks). Erskine added seven kills.
 
Hassan collected a team-high 27 assists, while Benesz added 19. Hayes collected three service aces, while Benesz and freshman Morgan Fox both added two.
 
Benesz represented the Scarlet Raptors on the all-tournament team.
