CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 5, 2018) – Very early in Monday's game, the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team got a wakeup call when Neumann University scored off a corner kick.
The Scarlet Raptors responded in a big way, dominating the Knights most of the contest en route to a 4-1 non-conference victory. It was the most goals scored by Rutgers-Camden since another 4-1 victory last year at Lancaster Bible College on Oct. 4.
Rutgers-Camden evened its record at 2-2, while Neumann fell to 2-3.
Neumann's tally came only 1:09 into the game when Danni Elman finished off a corner kick by Megan Briggs for her first goal off the season. By the end of the half, it was Rutgers-Camden applying plenty of pressure on the Knights' defense. That pressure finally paid off with 4:46 remaining in the opening half. Freshman midfielder
Daniela Nunez, pictured above, angled a perfect pass toward the left side of the box, and junior midfielder
Dominique Kelly finished off the tying goal with a high shot toward the right-center of the net. It was the first collegiate point for Nunez and the first Rutgers-Camden points for Kelly, who played two seasons for Rowan College at Burlington County.
Rutgers-Camden put the game away in the second half, scoring three times in a 10-minute span. Sophomore forward
Meghan Wachira opened her four-point night by scoring an unassisted tally at 53:25 on a high shot into the right side of the net from the left side of the box. It proved to be another game-winning tally for Wachira, who increased her career total to nine, tying Jessica Leoni (2006-09) for third place on the program's career list. It was her 16th career goal, moving her past Nicole Lauri (2000-03) and into sole possession of 10th place on the career list.
The Scarlet Raptors struck again at 57:59 when junior midfielder
Sarah Zuzulock scored her first goal of the season from the middle of the box after taking a feed from Wachira. Five minutes later, Wachira assisted on the first Scarlet Raptor goal by junior midfielder
Taylor Hueston, who outhustled Neumann keeper Anna Attardi to a loose ball in the box and scored from near the goal line. Hueston transferred to Rutgers-Camden after playing two seasons at New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Kean University.
Sophomore
Natalie Eberhardt earned the win in goal, working the first 65:15 and making one save. Senior
Liz DiCamillo worked the final 24:45 without allowing a goal. She made one save.
Despite being on the attack most of the game, the Raptors only held a thin 8-7 advantage in shots, with six of them on goal. Attardi made two saves for the Knights.
Rutgers-Camden visits Widener University Wednesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference game. The Scarlet Raptors return home Saturday to begin NJAC play by hosting Montclair State University at 1 p.m.
