MONTCLAIR, N.J. (Sept. 15, 2018) – The Montclair State University men's soccer team scored the lone goal of the game off the rebound of a saved penalty kick and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 1-0, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Montclair State improves to 6-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden falls to 3-3-1 and 0-1.
The Red Hawks were awarded a penalty kick in the 36th minute, but the shot by Jose Huerta was blocked by Raptor senior goalie
James Brett. Huerta, however, banged in the carom from the save to score his sixth goal of the season.
In a game that featured six yellow cards and one red card, allowing the Scarlet Raptors to play with a man advantage over the final 5:49 of action, Montclair State finished with a 22-7 advantage in shots and a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
Brett made eight saves in the game, including seven in the second half when the Red Hawks outshot the Scarlet Raptors, 14-4.
Montclair State keeper Mike Saalfrank made two saves to earn the shutout.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. non-conference game at Misericordia University.
