CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 5, 2018) – For the past two seasons, whenever the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team has needed a game-winning goal, sophomore forward
Meghan Wachira has answered the request.
Wachira provided that tally again here Wednesday on a sweltering hot afternoon as the Scarlet Raptors blanked Lancaster Bible College, 1-0, in their home opener.
Rutgers-Camden evens its record at 1-1. It was the season-opening game for the Chargers.
Lancaster Bible had the better of play in the opening half, out-shooting Rutgers-Camden by an 8-3 margin and holding a slim 2-1 edge in corner kicks. Despite that advantage, it was the Scarlet Raptors that produced the game's only goal, and it came only 4:51 into the contest. Freshman forward
Ava Pizzaro sent a perfect cross from the right side toward the left side of the box, where Wachira banged in her second goal of the season off the left post. It was Pizzaro's first collegiate assist after she notched her first goal in a 4-2 loss at Elizabethtown College during Friday night's season opener.
Wachira, who set a single-season program record last year with seven game-winning goals, made it eight for her career with the tally against Lancaster Bible. Her eighth game winner tied Lisa Boisvert (1999-2002) for fourth place on the program's
career list. It also was her 15th career goal overall, tying for 10th place on the Rutgers-Camden career list with Nicole Lauri (2000-03).
Wachira has scored the game-winning goal in all eight Raptor wins since her freshman year.
That tally was all the Raptors needed as a strong defense, anchored by freshman
Breana Winder (pictured above) helped sophomore goalkeeper
Natalie Eberhardt post her first shutout since transferring to Rutgers-Camden. Eberhardt made five saves, matching the total made by her Charger counterpart Kendra Brown.
Rutgers-Camden finished with a 12-9 edge in shots and an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Scarlet Raptors completely flipped the switch after the break, however, as they out-shot the Chargers, 9-1, in the final 45 minutes and out-cornered them, 7-2.
The Scarlet Raptors play a 3 p.m. non-conference game at Washington College (Maryland) on Saturday.
