WAYNE, N.J. (Jan. 19, 2019) – The William Paterson University men's basketball team went on a 21-5 run to end the first half, taking the lead for good, and went on to defeat Rutgers-Camden, 80-55, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers improve to 11-7 overall and 6-5 in the NJAC, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 2-16 and 2-9.
Paterson leads the all-time series, 61-7, and has won four straight games and 25 of the last 27 against Rutgers-Camden.
Behind nine points from freshman guard
Adam Perry, the Scarlet Raptors built a 31-17 lead with 7:15 remaining in the opening half before Paterson came roaring back. The Pioneers finished out the half with a 21-5 run, led by junior forward Sean Smith, who had 14 points in the first-half streak. Smith hit a trey to tie the game at 33-33 with 2:44 remaining in the period. He added a jumper with 49 seconds left in the half to break a 36-36 tie and give William Paterson the lead for good, 38-36 at the break.
Smith finished with a game-high 20 points, while senior forward Saint Simeon Beaubrun collected a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Pioneers Paterson finished with a 48-25 advantage off the boards.
Junior guard Anthony Uribe and sophomore forward Nasir Fields both added 11 points for William Paterson. Sophomore guard Domenic Mignone and junior guard Sajimir Asani tied for game-high honors with five assists apiece.
Rutgers-Camden received 12 points from senior guard
Trai Greer, pictured above. Greer added three assists, four rebounds and one steal for the Scarlet Raptors.
Perry finished with 11 points, while sophomore guard
Terrance Harris netted eight. Junior guard
Robbie Brosh caned six points, while adding two assists and a game-high three steals.
William Paterson shot 34-for-63 (54.0 percent) from the floor, while Rutgers-Camden was 17-for-56 (30.4).
Rutgers-Camden returns to NJAC action Wednesday when it hosts Stockton University in an 8 p.m. game.
