CAMDEN, N.J. (Jan. 23, 2019) – The Stockton University men's basketball team jumped to a quick 5-0 lead, was tied once, but never trailed as it defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 78-61, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.
The Ospreys, who snapped a two-game losing streak, improved to 8-11 overall and 6-6 in the conference. Rutgers-Camden, which has lost five straight, fell to 2-17 and 2-10.
Stockton leads the all-time series, 76-8, and has won its last 22 games against Rutgers-Camden.
After Stockton established its early five-point lead, the Scarlet Raptors came back to tie the game at 5-5, using a pair of foul shots by senior forward
Chin Akwarandu, sandwiched around three free throws from sophomore guard
Ian McCarthy. Moments later, however, freshman guard Kyion Flanders hit a three-pointer to give the Ospreys the lead for good. The closest the Scarlet Raptors came after that was on a jumper by McCarthy, cutting the margin to 8-7.
By halftime, Stockton had built a 33-24 lead, aided by the hot hand of freshman forward Travis Holland, who scored 11 points in the first 20 minutes, helped by 3-for-4 shooting from long range. The Ospreys opened up leads as big as 23 points (65-42 and 67-44) in the second half.
Junior guard Brandon Hamilton paced Stockton with a game-high 21 points, while Holland netted 17. Both Flanders and junior forward Steve Ferebee contributed 10 points. Ferebee also added eight rebounds as Stockton won the battle of the boards, 47-33.
Sophomore guard
Kyle Goodson Jr. scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Scarlet Raptors. Another sophomore guard,
Terrance Harris (pictured above), added 13 points, while senior guard
Trai Greer scored nine. Greer and Akwarandu had six rebounds apiece.
Junior guard
Robbie Brosh collected a game-high three steals, while adding four points.
Stockton shot 28-for-61 (45.9 percent) from the floor, including 11-for-30 (36.7) from three-point range. Rutgers-Camden shot 18-for-53 (34.0) from the floor, including 4-for-22 (18.2) from beyond the arc.
Rutgers-Camden returns to NJAC action Saturday when it hosts Kean University at 3 p.m.
