JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Feb. 9, 2019) – The New Jersey City University women's basketball team went on a 13-point run early in the third quarter to break open a tie game and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 83-66, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest here Saturday afternoon.
The Gothic Knights, who were honoring their four seniors on Senior Day, improved to 5-19 overall and 2-15 in the NJAC. They earned a season split against Rutgers-Camden, snapping the Scarlet Raptors' seven-game winning streak in the all-time series. The Raptors now lead that series, 39-25.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Scarlet Raptors, who entered the day battling to secure a fourth-place berth in the NJAC standings, along with a first-round home playoff game. The Raptors can still secure that berth, depending on a variety of results Wednesday when they travel to Montclair State University for their final regular-season game at 6 p.m.
Rutgers-Camden will bring a 14-10 overall record and a 9-8 conference mark into that game.
The Scarlet Raptors led only once, at 15-12, in a game that was tied on five occasions. The final tie came at 27-27 after sophomore guard
Shane Holmes drilled a three-point field goal early in the third quarter. The Gothic Knights rattled off the next 13 points, including a pair of treys by freshman guard Teresa Ortiz. By the end of the third quarter, NJCU held a 55-38 lead and NJCU led by as many as 22 points (71-49 and 83-61) in the fourth quarter.
Senior guard/forward Christine Bizub scored a game-high 23 points for the Gothic Knights, while a pair of senior guards added double-doubles: Marajiah Bacon had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Jesenia Montalvo collected 10 points and 10 boards. Both Marajiah Bacon and Montalvo added five assists. Ortiz finished with 18 points and senior forward Miesha Bacon canned 10 points.

Wykira Johnson-Kelly,
pictured above, had 16 points, six assists and six rebounds. Holmes finished with 15 points.
NJCU shot 29-for-58 (50 percent) from the floor, including a blistering 12-for-17 (70.6) from three-point range. The Gothic Knights also held a 45-32 advantage off the boards against the Raptors, who shot 23-for-68 (33.8) from the floor.
Rutgers-Camden closes the regular season Wednesday with an 6 p.m. contest at Montclair State University.
