EWING, N.J. (April 10, 2019) – The nationally-ranked men's tennis team at The College of New Jersey came into the season as the heavy favorite to win the first New Jersey Athletic Conference title since the league was disbanded for lack of teams two decades ago.
The 28th-ranked Lions clinched the title in one day with back-to-back 9-0 sweeps over both Rutgers University-Newark and, later, Rutgers University-Camden. The victories lifted TCNJ to 12-2 overall and 3-0 for a sweep in the four-team NJAC men's tennis league.
The Scarlet Raptors drop to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the NJAC, with one conference match remaining to be played against Rutgers-Newark on April 20.
The Raptors won only one game against the Lions, with the first doubles team of sophomore
Adney Cardoza and senior
Vatsal Patel losing, 8-1. The Raptors were swept, 8-0, at second doubles (sophomore
Shariq Khan and freshman
Victor Flores) and third doubles (sophomore
Matt Deak and freshman
Steven Zhang).
TCNJ won each singles match by a 6-0, 6-0 score. The Scarlet Raptors' singles lineup included Deak at No. 1, Cardoza at No. 2, Zhang at No. 3, Patel at No. 4, sophomore
Jose Vargas at No. 5 and Khan at No. 6.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday with a 1 p.m. match at Albertus Magnus College, a battle which counts in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference standings. Albertus Magnus is 1-0 in the GNAC, while Rutgers-Camden is 0-1, with the loss coming against perennial champion Ramapo College.
