Montclair State lacrosse team tops Scarlet Raptors

MONTCLAIR N.J. (April 13, 2019) – The Montclair State University lacrosse team scored the first 12 goals of the game here Saturday and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 19-3, in New Jersey Athletic Conference action.
 
The Red Hawks improve to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in the NJAC, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 4-6 and 0-2.
 
Montclair State scored early and often, notching three goals in the first 1:58, all three assisted by Megan Mahlstadt. Rutgers-Camden was blanked until 4:11 remaining in the first half, when freshman Carly Gregg scored the first of her two goals on the day.
 
By halftime, the Red Hawks held a 13-1 lead, aided by a 20-4 advantage in shots.
 
Freshman Jazmin Torres scored 35 seconds into the second half for the Scarlet Raptors, assisted by senior Cara Racobaldo, and Gregg added her second unassisted tally of the game with 12:34 remaining.
 
Montclair State received two goals and seven assists from Mahlstadt for a game-high nine points. Kyle Graver added three goals and four assists for seven points, while Chelsea Orban had four goals for four points. Brittany Costigan collected 14 draw controls for the Red Hawks, who held a 35-8 advantage in shots.
 
Gregg, pictured above, notched two goals and Torres had one for the Raptors, while Racobaldo had the team's lone assist. Gregg leads the team in goals with 36 and is second on the Raptors with 41 points, trailing fellow freshman Claire Gailliout (44 points).
 
Gregg also added a team-high two ground balls and freshman Breeanna Stauss collected a game-high two caused turnovers.
 
Montclair goalies Amanda Maguire and Allyn Lilien combined for five saves. Raptor sophomore keeper Brittany Watson made 10 saves.
 
The Scarlet Raptors play a 4 p.m. non-conference makeup game at Immaculata University Tuesday. The game was originally scheduled as Rutgers-Camden's season opener on March 2, but was postponed by snow.
